I'm personally not convinced that he as a single person really actually existed. I think that the biblical stories about him were either made up legends or a conglomeration of stories about other people used by Christians to describe their god-man. If it weren't for the total lack of contemporary writings about him, I might give some credence to the idea that he actually existed.
Even if it is proven that he actually existed, he certainly wasn't the son of any god with magical powers. And he definitely didn't look like the white European Jesus as currently depicted by Christians.

Republican Jesus was (or is), but certainly not the "historical" Jesus.
I love how Christians like to claim that Jesus' resurrection is definitive proof of his divinity and that the Christian religion is the one true religion. That's like saying that Huckleberry Finn really existed & traveled down the Mississippi River because it was written in a book. Or, it's like saying, "Our religion is true because of one of the things we believe!"

The current line of thought, bending both ways, is that Jesus would most likely be a composite character. Some stories were given the narratives of religious and cyclical prophecy, others were either every-man stories, or a series of narratives concerning actual religious leaders and mystics. It's easy to point at myths, because of their formulaic composition, much harder to separate every-mans from mystics. In short, there is no historical Jesus apart from the history of the narratives.
(If Jesus has his EIB he was obviously squared away, not some part timing shitbag weekend warrior.)

It's still special pleading. Xtians would be the first ones to denounce Zeus, Osiris, Quetzlcoatl, Odin, Marduk, Shiva, etc as made up shit. But THEIR boy? No that has to be real. These attempts to define him down into something believable are an attempt to reconcile two contradictory positions.
