Quick Poll - Do you believe in God?
RE: Quick Poll - Do you believe in God?
(July 1, 2020 at 7:50 am)Bulxy88 Wrote: Question is : Where does this "God" word come from, actually?

From a Google search:

Quote:The earliest written form of the Germanic word "god" comes from the 6th century Christian Codex Argenteus, which descends from the Old English guþ from the Proto-Germanic *Ȝuđan. While hotly disputed, most agree on the reconstructed Proto-Indo-European form *ǵhu-tó-m, based on the root *ǵhau-, *ǵhau̯ǝ-, which meant "to call" or "to invoke". Alternatively, "Ghau" may be derived from a posthumously deified chieftain named " Gaut" — a name which sometimes appears for the Norse god Odin or one of his descendants. The Lombardic form of Odin, Godan, may derive from cognate Proto-Germanic *Ȝuđánaz.

The capitalized form "God" was first used in Ulfilas' Gothic translation of the New Testament, to represent the Greek Theos (uncertain origin), and the Latin Deus (etymology "* Dyeus"). Because the development of English orthography was dominated by Christian texts, the capitalization (hence personalization and personal name) continues to represent a distinction between monotheistic "God" and the "gods" of pagan polytheism.

"The earliest written form of the Germanic word "god" comes from the 6th century Christian Codex Argenteus"

Wait a minute. I was asking figuratively.

What about before the "6th century" ?.

yet, it had another name.

maybe another meaning(other than the present one we use) too.

So actually I was asking where those coming from and why( Even if there was something reliable/authentic)?
(I just wanted to ask yourself not the google, I'm not here to try to answer a question, just asking question)

again like all my other questions: so what? why should I know? and why I shouldn't

It has two options. If you believe in some sort of God (doesn't matter if you are a Christian, a Deist, a Wiccan, etc) then answer "Yes". If you don't believe in God (and that includes people who don't think the question is relevant), answer "No".

I just want to keep things very simple; I don't want to cause a debate over terms; if you think you believe in God, answer in the positive. If you don't think you believe in God, answer in the negative. If you are unsure what you believe, don't answer at all.

You can discuss your votes below; in fact this is encouraged as it will keep the thread highlighted in search results and so more people will be able to vote. Hopefully we'll be able to get most of the active users within a few days.

Due to you only including a single God in your poll, do you think all the other Gods would get upset?

Tibs has become an avatar for a deist god. He's not here anymore, but he started it all. Divi Tiberius!

YUP. Unable to honestly reply to that survey. "God" is not defined. Which God? The Abrahamic YHWH? Which YHWH? The petty tribal god with his wife Asherah? The psychotic monster In the Torah? Or perhaps  the YHWH who transmogrified into the one creator god and  lord of the universe?

Adding an "s" to the word god might help.  To that I am able to say "no".

I'm a sceptic. This means I question everything. The existence of gods is a biggie. I'm unable to accept that gods can be argued into or out of existence. I demand empirical evidence, one way or t'other and will accept nothing less. That's just my position, I'm unable to claim to speak for anyone else.

One thing I learned a long time ago is that atheists hate being told what they do or do not believe.  I tend to get testy when some dropkick tries to argue about what positions  'real' atheists should take.

Get where? Do you mean on this forum? Well by interntet routers, optical fiber and/ or telephone cables, etc.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
