Social Functions

RE: Social Functions
One of my favs. Had to have it in my sig. Big Grin
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence - Carl Sagan

Mankind's intelligence walks hand in hand with it's stupidity.

Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.

You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.

How can I cope with my emotional issues? (all these hypothetical btw - mostly)

These kinda things are no good if you have to write a cheque at the end. Kinda knocks the socks off the deal. Seems to me anyway. Not that I give a toss. But lots of folk seem to want (need?) that kinda stuff.

Spiritual solace...lol. So you think that a vicars advice is free eh? Cosmic judgement of sin, potentiality of hell. Shame, guilt, etc. Doesn't sound like free advice. Oh, and are we insinuating that churches run on mana from heaven? No, no, people pay the vicar for his services as well, so back to the drawing board on that one buddy. I'd rather pay a licensed professional by the hour.

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Good point. I would add this.... what kind of "spiritual solace" could an atheist possibly get from the church anyway?!?! Reality check pal ... they think you're going TO HELL!

At the end of the day, a Vicar is the director of a book club. There are plenty of secular book clubs. End of.

But that stuff's all imaginary, ain't it, so it doesn't matter. Actually, when you think about it, it's a great deal for us atheists!

Quote:Shame, guilt, etc.

There is that. But, like, you know, you can get over all that stuff pretty easily when you realise that, in fact, you've done nothing wrong. Unless of course - aha - you HAVE done something bad. Or don't us atheists supposed to have a concept of badness - like, we can do what we like 'cos there's no eternal judgment ... er, but hang on a mo, ain't that one of their lines that some of us atheists get pretty defensive about?

Quote:Doesn't sound like free advice.

Sounds pretty free to me. Anyway, I said "solace" not "advice" - my bloomin' cursor's disappeared for some reason, it's really disconcerting -

It's free at the point of use, like the NHS. Or the BBC.

Different strokes for different folks. Like I've said elsewhere, I've had oodles of solace from my local guy, and it never cost me a penny. What's more, he never laid ANY of the hell stuff etc on me. Not that it'd matter if he did, since I kn ow it's codswallop.

OK, maybe he thinks he might "get me" in the long run, but that's his folly, not mine. Meanswhile I'm getting a free ride on the solace express. What's more - HE LOVES IT!

RE: Social Functions

Different strokes for different folks = Stupid strokes for idiot folks. Whatever ... it's god damn ridiculous. You want to pay homage to a system you don't believe in because you need some kind of crutch - go right ahead, but don't think for a second that you can legitimize it, package it up and sell it to us as some kind of useful tool in living your life.

You're worse than the christian. You want all the lovey-dovey bull shit, but you don't like the hell part so you claim to be an atheist. You're pathetic and you give atheists everywhere a bad name.

You know, if he came out and admitted to being Godhead. I'd fall to the floor in laughter. Seriously. I'd laugh myself out cold.

Except that we pay for the NHS in our taxes, and you have to pay the BBC for a TV license in order to watch it...
