How many atheists here had a Catholic upbringing?
September 2, 2011 at 7:25 am
How many of the members that are atheist were Catholic or raised in a Catholic home and/or went to a Catholic School?
Looking at the introductions and deconversion stories it seems that a lot of atheists are atheists that used to be catholic or have a catholic upbringing, I'd like to see some numbers on that.
Best regards,

For your enquiry I can only state that the male 'parental figure' was a pedophilic, abusive cataholic.

My gran is catholic, and she was always trying to push her views on me, but even as an infant I was having none of it
But I went to a protestant school, which wasn't necessarily a faith school, we just had collective worship... Which, of course, I hated... and even got in trouble for not praying, that happened almost every day.
But yeh, I said no...

I was never actually a Catholic (I was raised Lutheran), but I did end up going to a Catholic high school. It was there that I ended up coming out as an atheist. For what it's worth, the teachers did end up as being surprisingly accepting of this fact by my Junior year.

I went to the religious indoctrination bullshit as a kid. Had communion, got confirmed. And I did it because I was told to. After confirmation I never went to church again. Been 38 years and counting! Fortunately, my parents weren't churchgoers and I didn't volunteer to go. Not because I didn't believe, but because I found church services to be so damn boring!

I was pretty much the same, but was also a member of the church choir, which was interesting since I didn't believe.

As far as I'm aware (and I'm the family genealogist), nobody in our family is Catholic.

Now that's interesting! How could you sing praises to a being you don't believe exists?
At one point I actually asked about becoming an altar boy. I'm glad I never followed through on it.
