Time for me to "fight" back.

I've been on this forum for a while, though I've been lurking for several years. I just wanted to say that the debates I've read here and the people I've chatted with have made up my mind on an issue very important to me.
I'm somewhat of an amature writer, mostly of fantasy, though I tend to avoid magic or the supernatural. I've never been published, but I've learned a lot and I've had some life changing experiences along the way.
I've just always been too afraid that I would fail to risk publishing anything. It's sad and it's depressing, but every time I try I'm always crippled by dread. I've been told that I write very well (and no, not by my family and friends), but until now I haven't had a subject to write about that's felt like it had a real, definitive purpose. I haven't had something vital and valuable to me, something that I thought was worth laying all my cards on the table for, so to speak. Now I do.
I'll break out of my shell, finally. Today, I'm going to start writing a book. I'm not going to let myself fail this time. It'll be fantasy, but I won't use that as an excuse to make flat characters and nonsensical magic. It's going to be realistic, as emotional as I can make it, and It's going to be firmly pro-atheist in a land where the church is law.
Some people say that a good book can change the world. This one isn't going to. Honestly, what are the chances it'll even ever show up in major chain stores? But I'm going to try, and I'll consider it a job well done if I can even make even the smallest mark on the world.
What falls away is always, and is near.
Also, I am not pretending to be female, this profile picture is my wonderful girlfriend. XD

Remember something of vital importance. It doesn't have to be well-written to make an impression.
Just look at the fucking bible for proof of that.

My best advice is don't think about spelling or grammar at all during your rough draft. You will edit, edit and edit again later. You have to let the first draft be like, "Wheeeee, this story is coming out of my brain." Later, when you find out it came out looking like a turd, you can turn it into a diamond.
Best of luck. Writing a book was the most painful thing I ever did. To this day, I am the only person who read it. For some reason, I can publish anything but fiction without having a panic attack.

That's great  Good for you. I've written a lot of short stories, but I don't think I'll ever tackle a book.
