D.C. is known for it's abundance of nice people?

Is there such a place? There are nice people no matter where you go. Then again, I spent most of my time there in graveyards, museums and monuments. People were pretty nice. The Krishnas are everywhere and they're nice too.

Well... Of course there's no place with people who are universally nice, but in my travels, I've found the pace of life in most larger cities has a negative impact on one's goodwill towards others.

Hated LA

Love New York,a fascinating city. PLUS you are a short train ride (leaving from Grand Central,one of the great train stations in the world) to Connecticut,which is beautiful. PLUS upstate New York is breathtaking.

Also liked Seattle a lot,very beautiful country. (pop up to Mt Rainier)

Had a great time in Honolulu if that's not too far.

Las Vegas could be terrific IF you don't gamble.

Comedy aside, I suspect it has more to do with economic reasons than quality of life.

I work in Portland (450k pop in the city, perhaps another million in the metro area). It's certainly not as cosmopolitan as NYC or Chicago, but its a fine place to live with lots to do.

OTOH, I live in a much smaller city (161k) and own a home in an even smaller one (12k), and while the quality of life is quite good, I do have to go to Portland to do much of anything.

I've visited over 50 cities.

So far I've been treated rudely exactly twice:

Once in New York: A stuffwitted immigration officer with the mistaken impression that everyone is just dying to live in the US.

Once in London: A snooty maitre'd at a 2 star hotel at which I was staying.

Simple rules of thumb:I am always polite,open and friendly,most people respond in like manner. (even in New York) NEVER EVER criticise a city or country to a native. I am a guest in their city/country,I behave like one. KEEP YOUR COOL and obey their laws. You do NOT want to be arrested in any foreign country.

I'm not a fan, but maybe it's partly because I don't like being bumped into a lot. It harshes my mellow.

I completely agree. I lived in the shadow of Mt. Rainier for three years. It got to the point where I just called it "The Mountain." You can't miss it.

CHARLESTON, SC! Don't miss it! Tons of all of the above, especially history. It's where the first shots of the civil war were fired. They have beautiful beaches, islands, and a whole culture of interesting Gullah people. They have a ton of awesome restaurants and watering holes, and the people are just awesome. I lived there for a year working as a fantasy wrestler/talent trainer. Had the time of my life. My youngest son still lives there, on James Island with his adoptive parents. If you go to Folly Beach you will be standing at the edge of America. It's amazingly gorgeous!

If your list is ordered by preference then I’m going to have to say New Orleans. And yea, Ybor City in Tampa is definitely a party spot.
