Recommend me a US city

I have an ex-pat Aussie friend who lives in Las Vegas; she's a CPA,and loves it. OK,she says the place is a lot less interesting since they got rid of The Mob.

Everyone I know who has been there loves the place. The consensus seems to be " nobody does high classy tacky like the Americans." (The Japanese are a close second,but without the class)

Well, i want to come over to the US of A next summer, it'll likely be for a max of 7 nights, but more likely nights.

Drinking
Eating
Partying
History (big thing)
Nice people

First of all, there are MANY cities in this country that kick-ass. I've been everywhere and there are pros and cons to everything.
First things first. It has to be a major metropolis. No problem there - we have lots. 2ndly, factor out eating and drinking. You're not going to have to worry about finding excellent food and lots of boos in a major metropolis.

I have partied in all these cities and they are all kick ass for one reason or another.

Las Vegas: Sin city! Greatest party town in the world! Drawbacks: If you're taking your wife, skip it. Also, hotter than holy fuck in the middle of the summer
Washington DC: History. Everywhere you turn there's history. It's quite amazing.
New York: Amazing food and lots of drugs! NY City wore me the fuck out daily.
San Francisco: Site seeing galore and some really nice hippies out there.
New Orleans: Everything is awesome but during the summer it's a muggy bog. Also lots of obscure history.
Chicago: Fun town with lots to do. Lots of history and comfortable in the summer. Also right next to the largest fresh water lakes in the world and of course the Museum of Science & Industry is something to see. Awesome pizza pies and for my money a win win.

Out of all the places I recommend tourists to see - I always end up recommending Chicago. I'm not saying those other cities don't kick ass ... they do! I just think Chicago is the best bang for the buck during the middle of the summer.

I'll second Charleston...but not in the summer unless you REALLY like heat, humidity and mosquitos so big they have to wear license plates.

Some fine restaurants there down by the Market. Tommy Condons for a beer and a burger lunch and Mercatos if you want something fancy.

Yes, the summers there are very tropical-ish. I loved Tommy's. Never made it to Mercatos. If you go there, just make sure you get a taste of shrimp and grits. It's to die for!

Take the short hop of about an hour south to San Antonio. It'll be a two-fer. Two rich (cultural) cities with quite interesting, yet differing, histories.

Yes, if you like unnecessarily sweating your balls off in the middle of the summer. Do go to Texas. Hopefully it's not on fire and overrun by Mexicans.

I thought New Orleans was a shithole before it sank. I got stuck there after 9-11 and we were so eager to get back to NY that 3 of us rented a car and drove the 1400 miles.

NO is definitely a shit hole, but then what large metropolitan area isn’t? I used to spend a good bit of time at Michoud and got to know the Quarter fairly well. The food is really good, entertainment is easy to come by and the place has a history. For the US anyway.

I have to say I was a little disappointed with New Orleans. Certainly, Bourbon Street is really really shitty. I enjoyed going to some places on the side streets and going up to Frenchman's, but the best fun I had there was going the other side of Canal street into the midtown area. A lot more laid back and just a better time.

Dotard makes a good point about nipping down to San Antonio from Austin. Not a bad idea at all. Just don't stay in San Antonio for the evening, the nightlife there is virtually non-existent.

Charleston, South Carolina has a great mix of drinking, history, nice people, nice food and a relaxing setting. I'm sure there will be places to party too. I thought it was beautiful, but I didn't get to stay long.
