I went to private Catholic schools until grade 12. I graduated, but had terrible grades because I put in no effort. I dabbled in community college for a bit, but decided to put off higher education until I was truly ready. I'm currently in my second year at UCSD, where I earned admission and a few scholarships despite my poor grades in high school (being an artistic genius can get you places ). So here I am. This time, I'm getting all A's. I'm working toward degrees in art (duh) and, increasingly, marine biology.
That will never hold up in court...

I left school at 18 with Advanced highers in Philosophy, Music, Art and design, Geography and Maths... I also have Highers in English and Technological Studies... I went to Uni for 2 years and got a DipHE Business and Management... I am now back at Uni studying Bsc (hons) Ethical Hacking and Countermeasures... Personally, I don't think formal education means anything at all, but it sure beats working.

I've always wondered if I was busting my ass for nothing in High-school? Apparently so...? How are you supposed to pick classes if you don't even have a clue what you want to be? Maybe I should pick the generic "I WANT TO BE A DOCTOR!"
If you get all A's out of 6 classes with a total of 3/4 honors classes will that get you anywhere? Hopefully so. If not, I'm still going to bust my ass over grades.

Eh, Miles. I didn't decide on Horticulture until well out of high school. But I've been drinking, so don't get me on a rant about the American public education system and it's overall dim-wittedness.

I'm not very acquainted with the "problems" of public education. Please enlighten me on the dim-wittedness of American public education.

Good grief!! You are all so talented!! Stick with it Miles, all I can say is "When the student is ready" you will know what to do. (Yeah I know it all sounds twilightzone mumbo jumbo but it does happen.)
For me...Dropped out of school @ year 11 and tried to get into Graphic Art Design (as it was called then), Ended up working in a Pathology practice so went to TAFE to get my Pathology Technicians Cert. Somehow couldn't get the required 90% for Biochemistry so went and developed my Interior Design & Parenting skills (was surprised I had them TBH) During that time I went again to TAFE and got my Advanced Diploma in Horticulture & Permaculture thinking to get into Uni @ 30 something to do Landscape Architecture which never materialised. Oh well, @ 40+ something went a retrained in Business to Cert III level and ended up working for a company that died at the GFC.
Now?? I am pursuing my passion for Landscaping and Horticulture with a view to promote "Edible Urban Landscapes" the rest is up to me

I attended Catholic schools from age 5 to 17. Left not having completed high school.
Went to work full time, finished high school at night.
Conscripted at age 20.
On return from the army, back to work.Completed a diploma in human resource management, at night, over 4 years.
Took a year off studies,
Was accepted at university as a 'mature age student' (age29). As planned, completed my degree, part time over 9 years. Straight A's.
The first member of my father's family to attend university,I've never quite gotten over the notion that a university education is a privilege.*
*in my state, approximately 3% of the population has attended university. In my suburb it's 2%

Are you kidding me? Basic memorization is not really complaisant with being intelligent in cognitive faculties. If anything I am not seeing a broad future ahead of me even with the grades I have. Looking at the situation my parent is in with job applications it begs the question "Does a formal education even count?" She has a masters degree in teaching and spent 10 years looking for a teaching job and nothing has came of it, so now she gave that up and is currently looking for a medical job. I guess I'm not very sagacious when it comes to "life".

I am sorry if I have misled you. I am not sagacious regarding "life" and you are right the future is looking very bleak atm.
What I am sure of is that a formal education is better than not having one. Possibilities may present themselves and it does no one any good to 'just give up' and like ya mum... to keep on striving for that job. I am hopeful but not stupid.
