Quote:There is no evidence outside the Bible that "Jesus" was a real person. Personally, I would say there probably was a guy named Jesus. As for the nonsense about walking on water, healing people, a virgin birth and rising up from the dead....
You are confusing the historical Jesus with the Jesus of the Bible. Most scholars accept He existed, was baptised and was cruicifed.
Quote:I can know that "Jesus" isn't coming back for the same reason I know that Elvis isn't coming back.
But if Jesus was God, then He could come back, couldnt He?
Because God can do whatever He wants to.
Quote:Wait a minute! Believers tell me that the Bible is the word of GOD! You're telling me it wasn't the work of a deity? (BTW, I agree with your statement!)
I believe the Bible is God's Word. I question how much of it is God's Word. The Bible was not written for people in the 21st century. The NT was written for a Jewish sect who believed in the soon return of Jesus, they were not expecting this world to go for another 2000 years! We have to take the Bible for what it is, a book written by primitive people. People who did not understand science or God. God spoke through these primitive people and the bigger picture is incredible; the plan for redemption.
Quote:Well, if the Bible is the work of a deity that people use as a base for their morality, the fact that the Bible permits slavery is a HUGE problem!
How is it? Did God or people write the Bible?
Its ok to have doubt, just dont let that doubt become the answers.
You dont hate God, you hate the church game.

Except there's nothing anywhere that supports this. There is no mention of a guy named Jesus in any first hand historical accounts.
Like I said, there probably was a guy named Jesus. But he was certainly not divine.

And if my grandmother had wheels she'd be a roller skate.
Pretty huge assumption you're making there.
Quote:Because God can do whatever He wants to.
Really? Can he sin?
Quote:I believe the Bible is God's Word. I question how much of it is God's Word.
I don't. I'd say the Bible is 0% "God's word".
Quote:The Bible was not written for people in the 21st century.
Then why doesn't this deity give us an updated book?
Quote:The NT was written for a Jewish sect who believed in the soon return of Jesus, they were not expecting this world to go for another 2000 years!
And they were wrong! Imagine that...
Quote:We have to take the Bible for what it is, a book written by primitive people.
Oh, don't worry... that's EXACTLY how I take the Bible.
Quote:God spoke through these primitive people and the bigger picture is incredible; the plan for redemption.
Poppycock. Unless, of course, you have evidence that proves otherwise.
Quote:Well, if the Bible is the work of a deity that people use as a base for their morality, the fact that the Bible permits slavery is a HUGE problem!
Quote:How is it? Did God or people write the Bible?
People wrote the Bible. But many people believe it was written by "God". And they base their morality on this book. So, if "God" tells us in his book that owning slaves is okay, these believers have a huge problem to reconcile.

No, no Thor. You said you knew Jesus was not coming back. Please present your evidence.

My "evidence" is the fact that there is no evidence Jesus was ever here in the first place.

Unfortunately a lack of evidence is not enough to outright prove a claim. Up until a few days ago there was no evidence that a life form from our planet could survive by using arsenic in its DNA but, that was discovered. You certainly have enough to disbelieve the claim but, to hold a gnostic position simply on a lack of evidence is frankly bad science.

Well I will post quotes from the Gospels of Matthew and Luke where Jesus basically says that the kingdom of god will come in the lifetimes of the people Jesus was speaking to, which was like 2000 years ago. Since then Jesus has not come back or either the Kingdom of God has arrived. It is quite obvious that Jesus is a balant liar.
Matthew 24
Quote:32 ‘From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. 33So also, when you see all these things, you know that he* is near, at the very gates. 34Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. 35Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
Luke 9:27
Quote:But truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.

Normally, I'd agree with you. But we're talking about an incredible claim involving a long dead person returning from the dead.
Quote:Up until a few days ago there was no evidence that a life form from our planet could survive by using arsenic in its DNA but, that was discovered.
If two weeks ago someone had made the claim that a life form on Earth could survive by using arsenic in its DNA I would have been skeptical, but I wouldn't have said that it couldn't possibly be true. This is because the claim does not involve supernatural woo-woo.
Quote:You certainly have enough to disbelieve the claim but, to hold a gnostic position simply on a lack of evidence is frankly bad science.
There is no "science" involved in the claim that a man dead for 2,000 years is going to return.

To attribute something to an entity that can "do whatever he wants" is to surrender every last vestige of an adult human's native capacity of intellectual rigor and regress back to the state of a babbling thumb sucking intellectual infant.
