Private prisons are certainly an issue, but the issue only exists because of mass incarceration. This is one of several things that come to mind and makes my blood boil every time I hear 'land of the free' near the end of our national anthem.
Mass incarceration exists, in no small amount, due to the efforts of the private prison complex.
