If Life is Meaningless Anyway, then What's Wrong with Religion?

Also I did ask you what your point was, read my last post again.

I actually did ask. Read my post again.

My participation in this branch of the discussion was kicked off by this comment of MrAgenda's:

You'll notice that the noun in that sentence is "people". Now, you might not be aware of this, but generally speaking, people aren't immortal. This is why your commentary is irrelevant.

Perhaps next time you could follow a conversation so you know what the fuck you're talking about, instead of trying to score Internet Points™ and failing so publicly at it. I almost feel bad having to explain something like this to you.

yes.

Quote:And I've been both heavily sedated (sufficient to have my chest sawed open without me noticing) and asleep, so I'm in a position to know that sleep is far from the same thing. Neither is clinical death, for that matter.

as far as closing your eyes and experiencing 'nothingness', sleep and "sedation" are not far from the same thing.

I am merely talking about what we know about life and how it works. Consciousness is a property of a living things. Once your brain dies you can't experience anything - there's nothing to experience it with.

One way I've come to think about this question is what I call the "makes a difference but doesn't matter" perspective.  That is, much of what "makes a difference" (affects our lives, history, etc.) "doesn't matter" to the universe/reality.  Whether a person believes in a religion certainly does affect their lives - and often those around them to a greater extent than they might realize (especially if it entails raising kids in a religious context) - but, in the long run, I don't know that it will really matter.  Perhaps it "wouldn't matter" if a meteor wiped out all of humanity and every thing every human ever did.  But you don't have that.  You have your life.  And THAT makes a difference.

You clearly are showing your ignorance in not realizing that Mister Agenda was using his knowledge of "People", to assume how one who is immortal might act of feel.

As I pointed out, this is nonsense,  the original scenario was about immortals not regular "people", steering the conversation how an old person stricken with cancer chose to end their life, is totally irrelevant to the point.

If I cared any about internet points, I'd join the atheist camp and stick my nose up the nearest atheist backside for a kudos...

That'd be quite the scientific breakthrough.

The fact that people experience things while their brain dead happens quite frequently...

I think you have a misunderstanding of what 'dead' means, then.

The term brain death was used, not 'death'.

brain death has a clear medical definition.

I'll let you copy and paste that definition then.  Because that's what I'm talking about.
