These statements indicate that these people's expectations were violated: they did not expect relationships to require compromise, the did not expect relationships to require work, and they expected that that the happy love chemicals would last forever.
Non-sequitur.

As I said in my original post, yet. Lots of dates, lots of short relationships.
And it sound like nobody else really thinks about this topic the way that I've presented it.

Different experiences, I suppose.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Have you never listed to pop music or watched a Disney movie? You may argue that people know that pop music and television love stories and Disney movies are all fictional and that they're for "entertainment purposes only" but I think that many/most people still believe in "true love" and that finding "the one" will help them live "happily ever after."
According to one study ( http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=93078&page=1) "88 percent agreed there was a "special person, a soul mate, waiting for you somewhere out there," and 87 percent thought they would find that person when they were ready to get married."

This is probably why I know too many people who regurgitate this garbage. Okay, those same people are also a bit younger than me. Correlation, causation, or a bit of both?

Never heard that song about about my cousin carl, who lost his truck, and his dog...and he's sleepin on the side of the road, while I'm cryin over you?
As to what the poster above me quoted, isn't that just what we tell our sons and daughters to keep them from knocking each other up at the tender age of 12? Basically, we tell them to wait for that special person and hope that they don't figure out the jokes on them until the age of responsibility...when we're in florida at some elderly nudists club - right?

Oh yeah, I've heard that song. But we all know that your cousin carl can accomplish anything he sets his mind to, so if he goes to college and works hard, he'll get a great job and be successful someday. If he works hard enough, he might even become President!
Right? That's the cultural narrative.
And if you're cryin' over someone, don't worry, because it just means they weren't "the one," and if you don't give up, you'll find "the one," and then you'll find true love!
Right? That's the cultural narrative.

This is really what I'm asking here. If everyone knows that this narrative is garbage, why do people continue to perpetuate it?

Try some george jones? conway twitty?
Look, lol. You're at the point where you've had a few relationships, short...nothing serious. Maybe it's time to stop worrying about disney princesses and what they tell us about love? The genres called fantasy, it's -meant- to be unrealistic.

Honestly, I don't think everyone does know that it is garbage. It's a vicious cycle of supply and demand. Sources like Disney and romance fiction make the product because it sells and people buy it because the authors keep telling them that it's missing from their lives. The less experienced you are in the world, the more you believe it all. While I enjoy a good romance story, I'm just glad that I realize it's not real and it never will be. It's like porn. Watch it, but don't expect it to show up in your bedroom. I guess some people don't understand that.
I don't believe you. Get over it.
