Honor between soldiers/fighters?

I have always thought that it is different when a soldier kills another soldier in combat, and when someone murders another person in cold blood.
I believe that when someone joins the army/fight for a cause they are ready to kill, and die. What do you think? I believe most will agree. RE: Honor between soldiers/fighters?

When somebody joins the service, they;re ready to do neither. After a little conditioning, they might do the former - and have completely eliminated any thought of the latter. Sure it's different. Soldiers get payed.

There was zero honor in this:
The Omaha Police Department says the deceased victims have been identified as 22 year old Destacia Straughn and 2 year old Kenacia Amerson-Straughn. Family and friends confirm the two were mother and daughter. The three injured victims are 22 year old Kachelle Roby, 18 year old Jamie Latner and 21 year old Larrion Williams. The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

Well, there are certainly different degrees of homicide. Clearly, killing someone in a combat situation is different that shooting someone in their sleep. That being said, simply becoming a soldier doesn't make all of your actions laudable - a lot of horrific, unjustified, mind-numbing atrocities have been perpetrated by people in uniform. Boru

Even though I was in the military, I can't identify with this. I stayed the hell away from anything relating to combat. Sure, I went through the basics of it, but it wasn't ever real then... right?
I don't think any soldier is ever ready for the reality of combat until they are actually there. Even then, I know people who were there and they weren't ever ready at any time. My grandfather, who fought at the Eastern Front in WWI always told me he only fired in the air and never once aimed at someone. I believed him when I was a kid. Now I'm not so sure. I was in the rear with the gear, where my dumb ass belonged. Yet I still helped kill people; I supported bombing strikes that put up to 230 tons of bombs on the ground in a single stroke. A small cog in a big machine designed to kill people and break things, I played my little part, and I have to own that.
In a sense, a combat infantryman like Rhythm has a cleaner conscience, perhaps, because he had a better reason to pull his trigger ... no one was shooting at me. So I won't equate killing in combat to murder; but because no one was shooting at me, does that mean my little part supporting those bombing strikes was cleaner, or dirtier? I hope someone has an easy answer, because I sure in Hell don't.

Sure, I only made sure the refueling planes were in good shape. Those refueling planes keep bombers and fighters in the air longer, though. It's all one big, happy family in the end. He was invoking a soldiers right to miss. It's still pretty common. I wouldn't doubt him for a minute.

I remember a line from Starship Troopers: If I thought I wasn't capable of killing the enemy I would notify my superior officers immediately. |
