Medical Hope for "Brain Dead"

I think it's great. Like Neo said, it's a baby step, but a baby step in the right direction. I just wonder if this somehow gives more false hope to those who have a loved one in a vegetable state, considering it will probably be a very long time until it can be applied successfully. Sometimes closure is better than the emotional roller coaster of holding on to hope....

I agree that it is a step in the right direction in solving a problem involving those in vegetative states. Hope has its place, so long as people do not cling to the false version of it, I agree.

Guardian Article

Your supposition is a bit like saying you can cure a man's impotence by successfully setting his broken arm.

But then again this is the level you've set for yourself, deliberate mendacity in the service of your imaginary friend.

It's Wooters, when was the last time he allowed the truth to derail his lying for jesus?

How? By pointing out his lies?

If you cannot criticise somebody for lying, then how is anybody ever going to learn anything?

You're right, I didn't have a point. I just wanted to share an interesting article rather than start a debate. Maybe it would have been nice to discuss the necessary and sufficient conditions for consciousness suggested by the article or the medical ethics of terminating people with severely compromised brains.

"Fine," as in, fine, you've made your nitpick. "Whatever," as in I don't care because the topic of the article is more interesting than whether I got some detail or definition wrong in the thread title.

Don't deflect. "Fine, whatever" was the point you thought you had, when it wasn't.

If you personally want to stick to your guns, then so be it. I cannot have a rational discussion regarding the article if you cannot admit that you were wrong about comparing being "brain dead" to a "vegetative state".

Nope. The "Fine. Whatever" comment came before both of those comments. And it was the 3rd post in the thread.

The "Fine. Whatever" attitude to being corrected about something incorrect was what provoked Thump to make his comment.

I mean, it's like, why be pissy about learning something?

I mean..... it's kind of clear when Thump QUOTED the "Fine. Whatever." comment in his post:

I mean... what Thump said is completely fair enough. Why the shitty attitude over being corrected? That's kind of the point. It's like Neo is only interested in being right and hates being corrected when he's wrong. It's very much an ego thing for Neo. Which is rather clear if his attitude becomes "Fine. Whatever." after being taught something. I bet he was a nightmare for his teachers in school Tongue

It's not like I only read his posts. I read all the posts on this thread, saw something that seemed off, and commented on it. If it had been the other way around, I would have done the same thing.

I'm talking about how he's treated myself and others in the past, not just in this thread. If you don't know both sides, your chastising is of doubtful utility. If you wish to criticize my behavior towards him, perhaps you should take the time to wonder why first. Just a thought.

I wasn't talking about the whatever comment. I was talking about the other comment L.P. quoted.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

You also commented my posts. I didn't mention religion at all, but you took issue with my condescending tone without understanding why I take that tone with him.

Of course I'm going to tell you off at that point. When you don't know the whole story, it's unwise to take sides.

I mentioned your post in response to L.P. because he asked who me where Neo was being critisised. In response to him, i mentioned several posts. Yours was one of them, though I specified that while your post wasn't critical, it was condescending.

Im not taking sides. Just commenting on my observation here, and that is that you guys are proving his point which is using this thread to pick at him rather than comment on the topic at hand.

That's great! The vagus nerve is amazing. When you go poop and bear down and you feel light headed you are stimulating your vagus nerve. Not trying to be petty. That is just how fundamental the vagus is. In nursing homes and hospitals, elderly people passing out on the toilet is so common nurses have turned "vaguled" into a verb. The patient has collapsed,  is pale, diaphoretic, sitting on the toilet. "He must have vaguled". They are hypotensive and bradycardic. They usually come around within a few minutes. Vaguled to the point of death is my primary theory for dead Elvis.
