45's usage of that word was not, "They are not doing economically well." It was about RACE. No matter how bad a country might be doing economically, it is STILL wrong to assume the guilt of the individual that might seek a better life by coming here. 45 has SHIT on Puerto Rico, whom ARE part of our nation.

I am not against the immigration, so I agree that we should not assume people are guilty because their country sucks.

I don't think Trump assumed that his words would be released to the media (but he should know better by now), so I don't think he was pandering to anyone if his comments were not meant to be made public.

Why does everybody act like the US used to be this great country that welcomed immigrants of all kinds. Exclusion acts, racist violence... in the 1910s Italian immigrants in the south were lynched. And let's not even talk about the anti Chinese propaganda. Every generation hates immigrants and wants nothing to do with them. Especially non white migrants. It's a testament to the social construct of race, actually: an Alabama (I believe it was Alabama) state court ruled in the early 20th century that Italians were as black as the blackest negro and thus should not have the right to vote.

We act like that's always been the ideal we're working towards...and yes...we have a spotty and sometimes horrific history but we seek to make progress from that point, learning from our mistakes...to make the america that is more closely reflective of the america that could be.

-and then...there's the rest of us. Those who don't do that, don't want to do that, and have to be dragged along kicking and screaming the entire way.
