Churches have employed the help of police to stop traffic in order for church congregants to be able to exit more easily into traffic.
I personally figure the police have better things to do and that the church congregant issue of leaving the premise should be their own business.
Every damn Sunday!
There's a mega church about 5 miles from me that uses the police for traffic control purposes on Sundays. As long as the church is paying for the service, I don't see an issue.
Diverts police resources from essential work. Even if the church is paying, doing this every Sunday is an imposition on the community (I was going to say serious imposition only I realised US police forces are populated with semi-trained knackers).

What exactly is this essential work that's more important than directing traffic during a busy hour? Do you just think police shouldn't direct traffic in general?
I don't like it any more than any other atheist when half the stores in town close down just so people can sit on a bench and listen to a guy read a book to them, but I honestly don't know what the rub is about police directing traffic.

Funny how Christians can claim to 'love' gay people and still expect them to be celibate and have no rights to get married or adopt kids.
Then in the next hand say people hate them because they shouldn't get police to go out of their way to direct traffic once a week every week for one congregation on the taxpayers dime.
"Tradition" is just a word people use to make themselves feel better about being an asshole.

I do. And I've already said it. Do you think this thread would exist if police were directing traffic for people coming out of a concert or something? No. It's because they were coming out of a church. And some folks just have a prejudice against people of faith.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

But why do they need it?
Can't the Lord provide ?

Well from reading the other responses before mine the whole working on security in your own time while wearing official clobber thing is completely alien to An Garda Síochána.
The first will get you sacked, the second sacked so hard you'll be on the dole the rest of your life. Only times you'll see a guard in uninform and off duty is when they're being decorated for bravery or they're in a Paddy's day parade, and the second occasion only happend after getting very special permission from on high. The whole uniform of duty thing is so import that no guard wears identifying markings when even on tea break.
