Pence is a narrow and stupid evangelical but who is nonetheless enormously ambitious. He wants to be president. If he is revealed to be the author of the NYT Oped, he would forever be branded as the dispiacable backstabbing traitor by trump loyalists. His Neanderthal anti-science evangelical track record will not allow him to ingratiate himself with those who would celebrate trump’s demise, however instrumental he might make himself in that process. Even if he becomes president with trump’s demise, he would be a hopeless, despised short termer. This could not possibly be his plan.
