Well I don't know about critters like yourself, you're just strangers on the internet. But in my view most people I know, especially as they get older appear lost and bewildered by life, they hunger and seek things, and meanings that never come to fruition, or are far less meaningful than they thought they were. They chase one disappointing idol to the next. 

The atheists seems to believe in a world in which man creates his own meaning, that there's near endless options as to what can constitute as a meaningful life, so to each is own. As a surveyor of meaning, there isn't multiple meanings to life, there's just one, only seen with great effort.  Those who don't see that are just perpetually lost, bewildered and disappointed, chasing after false gods. 

That the world is filled with men just staring at shadows in the cave, in denial or ignorant of the light outside of it.

The atheists seems to believe in a world in which man creates his own meaning, that there's near endless options as to what can constitute as a meaningful life, so to each is own. I wasn't aware that atheists are an homogenous group. .

My position is the meaning of life isn't at all complicated or hard to understand. There isn't one.* The purpose of life is itself.

As far as human beings go generally, not just atheists,  I agree with Voltaire, who said "most men lead lives of quiet desperation"

Not a popular view. I tend to accept it because one of my self labels is 'cynic'.

That's actually Thoreau not Voltaire. I also didn't mean just atheists, but most people in general. 

I think it's an entirely sympathetic view to see life as absent of any meaning. There seems to be all sorts of people selling us on different meaning, that end up being far more disappointing than meaningful. I remember being a kid, looking up to older guys who were cool, and popular , and which we idolized. But as I got older I learned of how much of a disappointment they became, sad men incapable of sustaining a marriage, raising kids, or life itself, stuck so much to the versions of their older glory which is no more. 

The lives of most people seem terribly sad, and this seems to have nothing to do with their careers, or how much money they make, how nice their house is, whether they're married or not, etc..... If that's all we've ever seen in the world, then it's easy to conclude that there is no meaning to any of this, not even ones we can supposedly create, all roads ultimately lead to meaninglessness.

Meaning isn't given, it's found.  Conscious beings are free to find their own meaning.  Some will simply follow the claims of their religion.  Others will find their own path.  For me, the second is far more satisfying, but to each their own.

I'll agree with you on one part, meaning is found, it's not created by us. In order for meaning to be found, there has to be a meaning to find. Absent of such a meaning, there is no meaning to find, just meaninglessness.

So, first morality somehow required a god.  Nope.  Next it was a good life.  Nope.  Now it's meaning.  Nope.

Sort of amazing, right? Who knew that all you had to do was shoot the shit with a bunch of godless heathens and your world would find itself larger than you had imagined before. Ths is somehing that atheism, contemporary paganism, and traditional eastern mysticism all have in common. Recognizing the multiplicity of paths to this or that.

Sometimes it seems as if people formed a view of the Christian God when they were about 12 years old, and based their whole life on that god and can't imagine a life without it. I have a great life, love, and try to be part of group of people striving to make this planet a better place. What do I need any type of god for?
