Pirates are cool.
Pretend pirates are cool. Actual pirates are a nasty piece of work.

Boru Granddaddy was only cutthroat when playing croquet, often with the man to his right, my great uncle Freeman. They made up their own rules depending on whose yard they were playing on and showed no mercy.
He was an amazing deep sea fisherman, musician, drunken old sea captain, champion checkers player, and overall a damn fun grandfather. He called me Cap'n.

I envy you. By the time I was old enough to have had a relationship with him, my grandad pretty much just sat by the fire and looked for fairy castles in the flames.

He had more pirate in him than you might think. When he and grandma Cathleen married, she was 16 and he was 24 or 25. Mom was born the next year and I was born 17 years after that. So, he was a pretty young grandfather. Their youngest (my aunt Sue) is only three years older than I am. Our generational lines are a little fuzzy.

Better than in the South, where the genealogy lines are a little fuzzy...

The Outer Banks of NC. Southern and also very isolated from the rest of the world...so, there's that.
The Navy having a base there for a while is what finally diluted the gene pool a bit in the 50s and 60s.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
