There wasn't any need for a new election. He'd already won in a landslide and it was stolen from him. It was an autocoup attempt, and I'd say it failed because the guy who made the pipe bombs failed more than any other reason. Maybe it was wet in his basement, or maybe his wires were corroded. Maybe he'd been taking too many painkillers a given day and some crucial step slipped his mind. Or maybe he was waiting just a few more minutes.

When the smoke clears - if 5 people go to jail for this - it will be a miracle.....
You seem to forget.
They all get jury trials - and unlike passing bills in congress - 51% isn't going to cut it.
Juries need to be unanimous....

They'll roll up more than five, I think, but only because both sides of government can get onboard with burying their mutual enemies under a prison.
They've all already been disavowed by the right wing, even claiming that they are antifa. Both Sides ™ are in love with tough on crime bullshit right now.

I agree no new election was needed, but that's a common ploy by dictators. The like to stage "free and fair" elections in which they receive over 95% of the vote and then gloat over how loved they are. That's right up Trump's ally; look at all my devoted followers.
Why is it so?

Actually, no. If both Biden and Harris were to die before the inauguration, Nancy Pelosi would become Acting President. Since a Democratic candidate won the EC vote, the Democratic Party would get to pick a nominee, and the electors would go to that person (Presidential Succession Act Of 1947).

I think the coup attempt failed when all living former secretaries for war came out and reminded the army of itsconstitutional obligations. I wouldn't be too surprised if a number of units had been primed and ready to come out in support of the Capitol hill mob.
