There were fires ignited due to the Tunguska event. And, according to the paper in Nature (I haven't followed up on the reference), there is another case of a settlement being destroyed by a likely air burst dated to about 12,600 years ago.

Most meteors would hit over the ocean. Those that hit over land would have likely been over unpopulated regions until pretty recently. So it isn't impossible that something like this happened. The question is whether the paper interprets the evidence correctly or not. It certainly does NOT try to play up the Sodom connection, mainly focusing on shocked quartz and directionality of destruction patterns.

In any case, it is an intriguing possibility. Just like a flood in the Tigris Euphrates valley that destroyed several cities is intriguing as an origin for the Gilgamesh flood. Conclusive? Not even close. But interesting if the interpretation of the evidence is upheld.

Lot was a good man and was warned, but his wife looked back at the destruction and was turned into a pillar of salt.

As mentioned in Wikipedia, Tall el-Hammam in the Jordan valley near the Dead Sea has been proposed as one historical site for Sodom, if Sodom was in fact a real place that was destroyed.

Well, according to https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-0...78-3#Sec68 , the best explanation for the archaeological investigation of Tall el-Hammam was that it was destroyed by a meteorite airburst, of larger magnitude than the Tunguska Event in 1908.  This also seems to have spread salt from the Dead Sea over a large area of land, making it infertile for 100s of years.

Could it be that this ridiculous story was originally inspired by a real event?

Diligent research will irrefutably show that there are a number of other substantive Biblical findings akin to the above.  A number will remain unconvinced by and unbelieving in the written Word, and by corroborating evidence, until their end or the end of the age.

The words of the Lord JESUS, the CHRIST:
"And whoever will not receive you nor hear you, when you depart from there, shake off the dust under your feet as a testimony against them. Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!” - Mark 6:11

The Holy Bible identifies Sodom and Gomorrah and its previously surrounding cities as "examples" to the rest of the world!

"And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day; as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire." - Jude 1:6-7 (2 Peter 2:6).

Sexual immortality? And the sexually moral guy was the one who fucked his daughters. You should really find some other moral book that is actually moral.

Jesus sounds awfully lot like an Egyptian tomb.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Just the opposite. This archeological search at best showed that the story of Sodom may have been inspired by some quick destruction, and in that case, it showed that Bible lied because it completely misinterpreted what happened: like God didn't destroy that town but some rock that fell from outer space, like it did with Tunguska in 1908.

It again shows you that Bible is a heap of lies made by angry bigoted people who want to seed disunion among people and that you should stay away from it.

A very interesting Youtube video by Scott Manley goes into the technical aspects of this story, well worth watching:-

-sounds like a description of contemporary christians..to me. Butt Suff doesn't get a specific mention. I've heard christians complain that god destroying an entire city over it's inhospitality misses the vry srs pnt...which is that god wouldn't do anything so dire for such a silly reason. No no....he'd only do it for Butt Stuff!

It's like christians cant believe in the god of magic book...or something.

Anywho, Messiah makes an excellent point. As poor as this research appears to have been, it's conclusions argue powerfully against magic books narrative, even if true. The proposed airblast destroyed the entire region. Not just two cities. Destroyed the fields and the streams and the lakes, too. Every single cow, pig, sheep, child, fish, mosquito.....everything. The whole thing would lay in ruin with toxic fields for six centuries.

I think Soddom was the town of "Pompeii":

https://www.britannica.com/place/Pompeii

Homosexual art was discovered there and the town perished by a rain of fire from a volcano erupting.
Its people froze like statues under volcanic ash; actually when they were discovered their bodies were carbon copied by the Italian archeologists into the museum.

That seems exceptionally unlikely considering Pompeii was destroyed in 79 CE.
