THE Gun Thread
RE: THE Gun Thread
Absolutely not. Although uttering threats is - in some instances - a criminal act, it’s also human nature and should not, alone, be grounds to deny someone a gun.

Hey, I completely get it. I'm wondering whether Biker has thought this through, is all. Imagine if this were The Problem used to deflect from an ideologically motivated mass vehicular homicide. Perhaps any driver who threatens another driver goes on a No Car list, too. Speaking in general, does indicating that you intentionally purchased a pistol to shoot someone with it count as a threat, while we're at it..such that the majority of hangunds owners in the US would have psychologically disqualified themselves by indicating that they bought a pistol "for self defense"?

If I had a dollar for every threat I’ve ever made, I’d never need another dollar.

Your edit: claiming you need one for self defense automatically disqualifies you from getting a gun license in NZ. Some might view this as excessively restrictive, but so far this year, we’ve had 51 gun deaths. This in a country of 5 million people with 1.5 million firearms in private hands. Make of that what you will.

It is safe to say the headshrinker thought he was "just an excitable boy".......

Sorry, but I think may be another unjustifiable assumption - how do you know he threatened to ‘shoot up’ a school? Every sourc7e I’ve looked at just said he made a ‘generalized threat’. I’d be happy to look if you have something more specific.

It is NOT safe to say anything about his psych evaluation. For all you or I know, he was found to be dangerous, just not dangerous enough to be kept in custody (I don’t know what the relevant standards are in New York for that). I’m not saying that was what was determined, just that we don’t know.

You seem to be of two minds regarding this sort of thing: when cops shoot people, you go on and on about ‘we don’t have all the facts’. In this case, you seem willing to substitute your own speculations for facts not in evidence.

You're right, there is a big difference. Cops blow mass shooters out of the park with their stats. They're the pros at white supremacy, and more than anything..these mass shooters are amatuers fucking up their gig.

The idea that our domestic terrorists are crazy, and crazy explains what they do, allows us to literally whitewash our problem. Mass shootings aren't even, primarily, a gun problem. Before they armed themselves with ARs and shit they were bombing people.

Indeed

Quote:(Reuters) - A Reuters  on May 6 indicates that a significant number of U.S. police instructors have ties to a constellation of armed right-wing militias and white supremacist hate groups, a report that adds to a fast-growing body of evidence showing a deadly threat inside U.S. police departments.

I've heard parents say to their kids, "I brought you into this world, I can take you out." And most of the time it is simple sarcasm, or serious admonishment but not literally wanting to kill them.

However, there are abusive bully parents. And others are mentally ill. Andrea Yates murdered her 5 kids by drowning them and she was having hallucinations  and post partum depression, and truly believed the devil was talking to her. Just like some people should never be parents, there are people who never should own a firearm.

I think I said it before, the truly responsible gun owners should want firearms to be harder to obtain, it would insure they don't end up in the wrong hands. I always hear from the far right on this issue, "Don't punish me, just keep them out of the wrong hands".

And for that matter, laypeople who don't take muscle memory training think they can operate successfully every single time. The security Guard working at Tops grocery store was a retired Buffalo police officer, and he still died. So I think it is even more likely someone with even less training and practice would meet the same fate.

Conversely a man in California tried to shoot up a Presbyterian church, and while he did unfortunately killed someone, the folks there disarmed him without guns and tied him up with electrical cords and sat on him until the police got there. So having a gun isn't a guarantee of success 100% of the time.

So, because there’s not cops involved, you get to make up whatever shit suits your narrative - actual evidence be damned.
