The more you fuck that chicken the harder you concede the point. No one forgot about handguns, and no one is baselessly claiming that such criminality takes place. It is manifestly apparent that it does.

You can purchase as many legal guns as you like. Transporting them to another state, however, would be a felony, punishable by five years imprisonment and a $50 000 fine. Then, no one would be able to blame Indiana for the gun violence in Illinois.

Would only work with firearms directly purchased from licensed dealers...which is not where the guns showing up in trace data are coming from. They're the only ones who have to keep records that could substantiate a specific offense - and you know how paranoid nuts are about lists.
Ultimately, alot of this stuff is illegal already - but with no means to enforce the law, no money to enforce the law, and no will to enforce the law...fanciful notions about control are just that. Fantasy.

Let’s say you travel from Indiana to Maine with Colt Dragoon you inherited from great-grandpappy, a gun not bought from a licensed dealer. You get pulled over for a broken rear light or something. The cop finds the gun and a quick check shows that you’re not a resident of Maine.
Unless you can prove you bought the gun in Maine, off to the pokey you go.

It's neither illegal to purchase a gun or own a gun from some origin other than a licensed dealer, nor is it a crime to transport your legal property between or through states. Creating a criminal offense of -driving through a state with gun- would be a rats nest for legality....and it's not like they'd be pulling over bubba..who's doing all the trafficking...to check, anyway.
It would be legally questionable, and wholly ineffective (but, as ever, alot of that has to do with our specific and unique situation and relationship to guns).
We know the answer. It's not a think tank thing where theres this problem and nothing we can do effects it. Those handguns showing up in chicago - out of state and in state? Three years or more time to crime. Buy them back. They're -exactly- the kind of guns bubba can purchase in other states cheaply, and in quantity. Thus, it's cheaper than the cost of their being out there. Harsh gun crime penalties are, themselves, premised on the notion that you can price gun crime out. That no one who wants the contents of the till at the 7/11 would pay x, for those contents. So let's do so directly and aggressively...unless we don't really believe that it's a thing that works, ofc.

Aforementioned Colt is not considered a firearm.
It is an antique percussion cap muzzleloader - and exempt to almost all firearm regulations. In many states they can even be owned by felons.
For the record - I always found this stupid as shit.
A single shot flintlock pistol will get you just as dead as any scary black rifle......
