Quote:Less clear is whether states would be required to adopt the federal form. States typically produce their own voter registration forms, and voters are free to use either to register in federal elections.
Only citizens can vote in federal elections, but most states do not require voters to provide proof of citizenship. Instead, voters must sign statements swearing they are citizens. Noncitizens who sign such statements can be charged with crimes and deported.
The order allows voters to use passports or certain driver’s licenses to prove citizenship, but not birth certificates. Separately, it also attempts to bar states from counting mail ballots that officials receive after Election Day. Last year, 18 states allowed mail ballots that arrived later so long as they were postmarked by Election Day.
Trump specified that he would withhold federal election funding from states that do not comply with the raft of directives included in his order.

I hate to tell him this but RealID doesn't indicate citizenship (permanent residents can get one). So, no passport, no vote.
Also, so much for constitutional separation of powers.

^Sven's right to vote will never be questioned. Pedro's always will be.

Here in the EU, everyone has an ID Card which needs to be updated every 10 years. We all have an ID number and need that to vote. It's been like that since... before I was born.
We can even travel all over the EU with only this card and no passport.
They look kinda like this:
Why don't you free people have that too, rendering any legislation like this into some bogeyman?

I expect that it’s just a matter of time until Trump orders ID numbers to be tattooed on voters’ forearms.

We have that in Mexico as well.
A significant number of people in the US are absolutely opposed to any form of mandatory national ID, to the point of paranoia.
I'd absolutely support this if such IDs were both free and easily obtainable by all citizens, but that's never part of these initiatives. It's as if vote suppression is the goal.

^Along with that is the idea that has been tossed around that a person's ID must match the name on their birth certificate which is not the case with many married women. I doubt it helps that I am also listed as a veteran. I applied for my renewed license online but just in case, also have an in person appointment set up for June. I did receive my new voter registration card so that part went through. But I don't trust any of the governmental agencies enough to cancel my appt.
Now I am waiting to see if my social security payment for this month gets taken back as well as wondering if I will get one next month.
Such a complete and utter clusterfuck.

It sounds overly complicated, I have recently moved house (in the UK) and had to get my driving licence and car registration updated, took about 5 minutes on line and I received the updated documents in less than a week.
