I consider these people my friends, I don't think it's right to leave without reason. As for the church, they acutally care about church membership, and they actually try to minister to their members (even those who aren't major financial contributors.) This is why I felt I owed them something.

Oh, when the second comment came along I figured I must have missed something there. There is a generation gap to consider. Even though I have teenagers in the house, and their job is to keep me updated on the latest trends in language, they do a poor job. Such is the case with a household of nerds.

I actually didn't know what to expect. It's situations like these where character, good or bad, comes out. I was afraid to say anything about my apostasy for quite some time but after a while you kind of need to do something.

As for the comment "protests outside your front door" though I know that this is an exaggeration, for some it feel like its not so far from the truth. Apostasy can be really upsetting for some people. They feel betrayed. Not just because you have gone over to the enemy side but because you have willingly left the group. I have a few friends of mine who are going through a very rough bit. It's what happens when most of your friends and family are fundies of the insane kind.

You're a lot braver than I am, but I live in the bible belt where such a revelation on my part may have a lot more negative consequences, especially on our small business.

I hope it all continues to go relatively smooth for you. It gets frustrating once you start having people that have known you for decades telling you it would have been better if you'd never been born.
