RE: Santorum - Rightwing evangelicalism is the founding of our country

If we end up with a candidate who runs on an overtly religious platform in the general election, I'll be at the voting booth for the first time in decades. I honestly don't see that happening though, because once they've pandered to what they feel to be their base and secured the running rights (so to speak)...they'll have to change their message quite a bit to draw in the general vote. I expect the bible thumping to end the minute they have what they want and need to cross the aisle for votes. I expect alot of backpedaling and revision. See, no matter how idiotic they sound in front of a friendly audience, I don't think any of these people are as stupid as they seem.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

In a sane country, he would have been laughed off the podium a long, long time ago, along with Batshit Shelly and any other idiots who claim God talks to them. I think most of it has to do with a blind hatred of anything not strictly Christian, and since fundie Christians see their iron grip on American society slipping away bit by bit, they want to try to elect the most extreme candidate they can in order to bring the country back to where they think it should be. What they fail to realize is that the rest of the voter base, the vast majority who aren't conservative fundie Christians, will never elect someone like that. They actually enjoy the freedom to have sex outside of marriage with contraception, and even gay sex. Not only that, but Santorum can harp on gay sex and contraception all he wants, but seems to not realize the real issue is the economy. Even Bill O'Reilly said that he was wrong for saying that JFK's comments on the separation of church & state "makes him want to throw up." I think even most conservatives know that Santorum is more of a liability than an asset in this election.
I was in a conversation just last week with someone who was against gay marriage because he thought quote: "it just takes one loose rock to cause an avalanche". In other words he thought that if he allowed gays to marry then our whole country would quickly go to pot so to speak. I suppose this means that Jesus would need to come early to save us all from ourselves but that's another topic of discussion, lol.
As for the "god talks to them" bit. Christians forget history and how listening to "gods voice" has caused so many horrible things. With their lens, anyone who made a good decision based on something that god spoke to them really did hear from god. Anyone who did bad things had the devil speak deception to them. Anyone who looks at the situation as a whole realized how dangerous this thing can be.
I have studied the Bible and the theology behind Christianity for many years. I have been to many churches. I have walked the depth and the breadth of the religion and, as a result of this, I have a lot of bullshit to scrape off the bottom of my shoes. ~Ziploc Surprise

I am so glad I finished my tea before I read that. Otherwise I'd be cleaning my computer screen right now. Lol.

I just sat down with a cup. Fortunately, it's too hot to drink.
