Fire would have been a very important element of their lives, so this hypothesis isn't at all far fetched.
The thought that ideas flowed along the north-south trade routes coming up from southern Arabia towards Syria and Phoenicia isn't so far fetched in the iron age. The attempt to try to graft biblical characters from the bronze age makes the theory a bit silly.
As previously noted, things don't have to be terribly well thought out to impress the theists.
