Tis the Season of Bull Shit

"The Universe is run by the complex interweaving of three elements: energy, matter, and enlightened self-interest." G'Kar-B5
I don't really understand people getting upset over Christmas (unless they are Christian Fundamentalists) because it is really such a secular holiday these days, well at least in America. Just look at most Christmas specials....Jesus and religion are no where to be seen.
When I see Christmas as it has become, it reminds me more of the values of atheism than anything else...well Christians also champion those same values, but it's kind of different from what I have observed like trying to add on yet another layer called religious faith.
But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Those are humanist values. I am confident there are plenty of atheists who, sadly, do not adopt these values.

Just look at most Christmas specials....Jesus and religion are no where to be seen. For the record, it's not just the religious buffoonery that annoys me at this time of year. It's everything about the christmas season, equal parts religious AND secular. It's a horrible wretched time of year and we lie to ourselves and each other about it's significance. It has none. It creates selfishness and greed and allows the stingiest pricks on the planet to be absolved of their guilt by donating once a year to some cause that often deserves far greater attention all year long. The angry drivers, the impatient shoppers, the dolts with bibles and the fucktards pulling over in traffic to gaze bewildered at some idiot's demonstration of how much more they love christmas than you do. The radio stations with unending christmas carols and cheesy fucking movies on every goddamn channel. The Christmas parties that drain your wallet dry with the required presents you end up paying for on credit for the next 8 months. The uncomfortable family get-togethers, the binge drinking, the suicides, and the depression for MANY who don't have the things they see on TV commercials designed to show you what kind of christmas you "should have." Top it all off with the religious right screaming about a war on a holiday that was never theirs to begin with. By the time New Years Eve roles around it's no fucking wonder that all anybody wants to do is get so fucking hammered that they pass out while pounding out their seasonal angst with an equally disenchanted party goer. Celebrating the birth of JC is optional yes, but Christmas ™ is not optional in this country, and anyone who thinks it is, well, you're a delusional fucktard who sees what he/she wants to see. |
