I just read the wikipedia page on him. Nothing bad there. In fact I'm a bigger fan.

He didn't like the South African racist regime, no. He triumphed against it, peacefully. He married a child bride as a child himself, as was the custom (he was 13, she was 14). The guy was an inspiration and way ahead of his time. Even today the caste system and female oppression still exist and this guy was fighting it 100 years ago.
