I'm glad things seem to be going well, and that your doctor has been reasonable.
Take your time! There's no need to rush these things, and I hope we see you back here again, either as an atheist or otherwise. You're welcome either way! We talk about all kinds of things, it doesn't have to be about religion or atheism at all. Technically atheism isn't a decision anyway, it's a state of mind. If you don't believe something, then you don't believe it. Of course, it is clear that a situation where your mental state is altered can cause you to temporarily have different beliefs. When I was heavily depressed I viewed many things totally differently, and I had a massive paranoid reaction to the idea of marriage which I'd never had before. When I got my right mind back, that unfounded fear fell out again. For what it's worth, atheism is the logical conclusion of any critical study of the subject matter. You're not under any obligation to explain to anyone why you may now be an atheist, and if they can't handle it or want to force you to talk about, it's too bad for them. Just announcing you're no longer interested in it can be more palatable for people who may blow up at the word "atheist". Also, "weak atheism" isn't about even being sure there is no God, just that you're currently unconvinced that there is. No one is required to adopt the "strong atheist" position, where you actively believe there is no god. If that distinction doesn't make sense, please ask It's a sticking point for a lot of people. Take care of yourself We're here to help you through it all, should you need us, whatever direction you take. Feel free to send me a private message.

I prefer the terms agnostic and gnostic atheist than "weak" and "strong" merely because "weak" is misleading........ I think the whole open-mindedness and rationality of judgement of the so-called "weak" atheists life myself, is actually a sign of strength.
P.S. Robvalue you are such a nice guy and damn awesome, so glad you're posting here.

You guys are so lovely, thank you There's that big smile again!
I agree "weak atheist" isn't the greatest sounding phrase. It could do with a makeover. I like to use those terms because you can be a strong atheist without being a gnostic atheist (although some people use those interchangeably). You can claim belief that there is no God without having to also claim knowledge of it. So I think "strong atheist" in this way is a more accurate representation of the more confident sceptic atheists who are happy putting God in the same box as Perfume Pixies and Spritual Karma Energy. Maybe just spelling it all out is better, especially when dealing with people who are unfamiliar with the jargon anyway. It's just a shortcut term really. Feel free to send me a private message.

There are alternate terms: Quote:Positive atheism, also called strong atheism and hard atheism, is the form of atheism that asserts that no exist; negative atheism, also called weak atheism and soft atheism, is any other type of atheism, i.e. where a person does not believe in the existence of any deities and does not explicitly assert that there are none. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negative_a...ve_atheism I personally like the terms "weak atheism" and "strong atheism," probably because I am used to them. "Weak atheism" is not claiming as much as "strong atheism" (in fact, a weak atheist need not really be claiming anything); hence, it is a weaker position, a less extreme position. This is using "weak" and "strong" in a common way. One who takes a strong position on something takes a more extreme position than someone who takes a weak position on it. If I say I'm a weak atheist they call me a weakling. If I say I'm a soft atheist they say I'm a big softy. If I say I'm a negative atheist they say I'm a negative person.
Well you know what? Fuck 'em! Equivocating bastards! (October 7, 2015 at 3:12 pm)Evie Wrote: If I say I'm a weak atheist they call me a weakling. If I say I'm a soft atheist they say I'm a big softy. 2 out of 3 isn't bad!
