I don't understand why Jesus didn't just write the information himself.

Why Didn't Jesus Write?
|
As noted elsewhere, reading and writing were taught separately in those days. While it is clear the Jesus character could read, there is absolutely nothing in scripture to indicate he could write.
In fact, the ability to write was the more rare of the 2 skills, and if Jesus could write he would have been a scribe, not a carpenter. So, except for some fundies and evangelicals who will maintain Jesus could 'do anything', the reality is he could not write, and there is ZERO basis for asserting He could. Period. The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

Even in my era, grade school learnin' was summarized as the 3 'Rs', readin', ritin', and rithmetic.
Reading and writing, while taught at the same time to our children, are separate skills, and 'back in the day' being able to read was absolutely no guaranty that someone had the ability to write. In Jesus time, men who could write (who would waste time teaching a girl to write?) made big bucks from their skills. Then as now, contracts and business needs were pressing, and being able to write stuff down was a prized ability. BTW, Jesus probably wasn't a carpenter, the actual words translated to 'carpenter' from the old writings don't really mean 'carpenter'. The probable true occupation of Jesus was most likely just being someone who worked with his hands. Like moving stuff around, or a helper to someone with some actual skills, like plumbing, stone work, or even carpentry. IIRC, the carpenter thing regarding Jesus is more likely a theological assertion being a parallel between working with wood as he worked with people. Also, there is the obvious tie between carpentry and being crucified on a wooden cross. So Jesus couldn't write, and he probably wasn't a carpenter. I suppose if one were to sincerely believe incorrectly either of those false assertions, it could be concluded that individual was not in fact worshipping or believing in The One True Jesus, and was or will be damned to eternal torment upon their death . . . The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Same reason Fred Flintstone never wrote.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Well, there is the story related in John 8:1-11 in which Jesus writes something in the dirt. Of course, this could be nothing more than pious legend. It is odd that one able to write would not have put it to financial use. I suspect you're right, Vorlon. @OP: In a culture in which relatively few could read, what purpose would Jesus' writing his message serve? To fail to reach the very people his ministry, as presented in the Gospels, was supposed to reach, i.e., the Galilean peasants? Besides, one usually writes something momentous with a view to posterity. If the end is nigh and could come at any time like a thief in the night, then what's the point? There wasn't supposed to be a posterity. He got that wrong.
But relying on word of mouth for 50-200 years to propagate His message was unbelievably stooooopid.
There is no conceivable way what ANY Chritian schism believes is in fact the One True Jesus Inspired, Endorsed, Certified, and Approved Faith ! Hate giving credit to Mormon #1, Joseph Smith, but he was in fact correct in his assertion that all the other faiths were incorrect, and grievously incorrect. Now, that didn't stop old horny Joe from promulgating his own false religion, but he realized with the bar already being set so low, he needn't try very hard at all and he could still come up with another religion that was going to be commercially viable. The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.
Can't write if you don't exist.
