Are there any social functions currently provided by religion which are not provided on a secular basis?

If so what are they and how may the situation be remedied?

I've always thought that there should be functions held in halls and old churches on a Sunday morning where we can all go along and hear speeches and presentations given by local scientists, freethinkers etc. about the latest things happening in science and then after we could all gather in a local hall for coffee and cake Big Grin

Religions don't hold social functions, religious organisations do. Secular organisations do have social functions, you just need to find a local one that appeals to you.

Going to the pub with some friends is a good secular social function I enjoy.

I haven't. I can't. I might really, sincerely want to, might even keep it up for a day or so, but I know that after a while I won't be able to resist taking a peek.

I know it's weak, and I ought to be able to just walk away, but it's the temptation ... I can't resist it any more!
