That celibacy thing came about because the married priests were getting the land, which was heritable. So the RCC forced married priests to leave their wives, who were left to fend for themselves. Then they grabbed the land "back". If anyone thinks that the RCC wouldn't stoop to something like that, just remember the Inquisition. FWIW, if one looks at the history of the papacy, there were even married popes; sons and nephews abound around the papacy. IDK, The protestant crazies can get married and they don't seem to be faring a whole lot better on the sexual deviancy and coverup front.
Married people already work for the church..they help shuffle the priests. ( I have often wondered, though..if some take the vow of celibacy precisely because they have urges they'd wish to deny)

@ khem - The catholic church has had a shortage of priests for decades. Logically, it makes sense that a shortage of priests contributes to cover-ups and transfers of abusive priests to new parishes - there just aren't enough to go around. If you allow priests to marry, then you have many more potential priests - 4 times as many according to one study.
