Eh, depends on the area. I know some small towns that are chalk-full of scum bags, drug addicts, etc... I also know some small towns that are super friendly with very little crime or drugs. Interestingly, drug addiction tends to lead to higher crime rates. Go figure. I don't know if things are as black-and-white as small town = friendly and big city = mean. Or even all towns/cities are full of bad people.... or good. I think some people here want to prove that "small towns are just as bad as big cities." Probably not true, though. Smaller towns do tend to have the sort of "You know everyone and everyone knows you vibe" so people tend to behave. I think the anonymity of bigger cities allows some people to think they can get away with shit. That being said, assholes can live anywhere.

Interesting statistic.
The town in question ( the county seat) is just under 10,000 residents.
The crime rate?
For 2018 - incidents of violent crime - 12.
No homicides.
You can keep the big city.
I'm comfortable 10 miles outta town

Not an advantage but a fact: A few years ago, all at once, my former boss died. And my then-current boss's step-father. And my daughter's former teacher's ex-husband. And the former Editor/Owner of the local newspaper.
He was a great man.

If you do become a victim of crime in a small town, your goose could very well be cooked if you don't have a firearm handy.
Could find yourself fucked if you have a life-threatening medical emergency as well.
Small town living has its drawbacks in that regard.

I can attest that crime can be rampant in small towns. I live in a town of about 6000 people. Last year, someone stole a bolt of cloth from a local upholsterer and it was all anyone could talk about for three days.
The mystery remains unsolved.
