What can I say GB...condolences. We don't really do patriotism quite like that this side of the pond, I don't think. It's all deregulated free-market capitalism (and associated plutocracy) that's to blame in any case and we have the same fucking problems here, Tory scum ruling the roost and roasting the planet, screaming from the battlements, as always "life is FAIR! People get what they DESERVE!" in between personal multi-million dollar investment portfolio tweakings/droolings/fapings.

Yeah, that isn't my patriotism. Mine depends on the basic decency and truth of the american dream. People can argue over how to best capture that life, and I support that wholeheartedly,.....but I can't say that I ever expected anyone to call the entire framework into question.

When they do that, I remember how some kid who's name I never knew choked on blood under my own hands until I killed him. Until he stopped breathing. I remember how certain I was...that I was in the right.

I still think I am, but what does it matter if theres no one behind me, nothing more than the man who's hands were on some mothers sons throat? There can be atonement if her grandchildren live a better life because of it. There can be atonement if we persist, and our dream persists. If we give that up....i'm just some asshole who strangled a kid to death on the order of a king.

I've never served in the forces so really can't comment about that. War is mad - quite, quite mad, I do know that much. I also know that if we were in a conscription necessitating conflict I would not attempt to dodge the draught or be a conscientious objector.

The American Dream.....to me, these days, it seems like a law of the jungle survival of the fittest rat race and, basically, not good as the vast majority will lose/fail and the biggest, most ruthless psychos will win the most power, money and influence.

I didn't end lives... for that...and no one I know who did what I did...did...either. None of us were traipsing around the desert looking for yellow cake or trying to make our nut on ruthlessness. We knew better.

I'm trying to strongly express that there are no two sides to -this- shit. Either a person believes that no one one is above the law...and hey, you can think it's a bunch of procedural bullshit (it's not)...like a speeding ticket on an empty road.....but we still insist that a person pay the fucking speeding ticket............
