Just one in three Scots now identify as a Christian

A survey carried out by YouGov for the Humanist Society Scotland says that those who identify as Christian don’t share in key Christian beliefs with around a third of Christians (36%) saying they "believe the teachings of Christianity’ .

Only 28% of those who said they were Christian said they "believe that Jesus was a real person who died and came back to life and was the son of God" and only 18% attend church services.

The study found that in 2011 53% of people in Scotland identified as Christian - by 2022 that has dropped to 33%.

Some 70% of young people aged 18-34 stated they had no religion, compared to 50% surveyed in 2011.

The poll findings state how 56% of Scottish adults could tick the "none" box when asked what religion they "belong to" this month. some 33% are expected to identify with a Christian denomination with around 6% aligning with other faith traditions.

Behind church doors: White evangelicals are quietly fueling Trump's Big Lie

Forget Jesus Christ and the "good news" about salvation. All across red state America, the true faith of evangelical churches lately often seems more about Donald Trump and trumpeting the Big Lie. As Charles Homans at the New York Times wrote in late April:

In the 17 months since the presidential election, pastors at these churches have preached about fraudulent votes and vague claims of election meddling. They have opened their church doors to speakers promoting discredited theories about overturning President Biden's victory and lent a veneer of spiritual authority to activists who often wrap themselves in the language of Christian righteousness.

From the beginning, the religious right was the backbone of Trump's Big Lie. As Kathryn Joyce reported for Salon on the anniversary of the January 6 insurrection, in the run-up to the riot, "allegations about the 'stolen' election became nearly inseparable from messages of apocalyptic faith." The crowd that turned out that day was largely driven by religious fervor. Popular religious right figures were responsible for sending thousands of people to the Capitol to do Trump's bidding. Since then, the Christian nationalist devotion to the Big Lie has only grown stronger.

First Christians are fuling for Trump in the US, and then they are fuling for Putin in Russia

The EU threatens Vladimir Putin's Patriarch Kirill

The 75-year-old is one of 58 people newly targeted by the European Union. The suggested sanctions include a travel ban and asset freeze due to their closeness to, and defense of, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his course in Ukraine.

Sanctions would make it unlikely for him to be able to attend the 11th Assembly of the World Council of Churches, which takes place in August in Karlsruhe, in western Germany.

Kirill has praised Putin's military adventures abroad, calling operations in Syria, for example, a "holy fight."

He used the same term to describe the invasion of Ukraine, and has stuck with Putin's use of "special operation," rather than calling it a war. Allegations of atrocities committed by Russian troops against Ukrainian civilians have not changed his tune that the fighting is about territorial defense, not aggression.

Kirill has also denounced homosexuality and liberal values along the same lines Putin has.

In turn, Putin has allowed religion to be taught in school. Church revenue is tax-free. The Russian president himself often appears at Kirill's services.

The European Commission's recommendation to sanction the Patriarch is not set in stone. EU member states have to agree to it. If it goes through, Kirill may lose properties and other assets he is thought to have in western countries.
