Catholic order faces 130 child sex abuse allegations

The Irish wing of the Saint John of God congregation has so far received 131 allegations of child sexual abuse against members of its order over the past five decades.

Saint John of God has had a presence in more than 50 countries including in Australia, where it ran residential institutions for children with disabilities. Australia’s royal commission into child sexual abuse found the congregation had the highest proportion of alleged perpetrators out of the orders with religious brother members.

More than 40 per cent of Saint John of God brothers who ministered in Australia between 1950 and 2010 were accused of child sexual abuse. This compared with 22 per cent of Christian Brothers and 20 per cent of Marist brothers.

A total of €21 million has been paid out by six Catholic orders in compensation to victims of child sexual abuse.

Last week, The Dominican and Franciscan Orders told The Sunday Times that they had paid out €5.6 million in settlements with victims.

Millions of euros in settlement costs have also been paid to victims of abuse by the Spiritans, the Jesuit congregation, the Carmelite order and the Vincentian community.

14 California clergy members linked to Catholic church sex abuse scandal for 1st time

SAN FRANCISCO -- Sixty-six Catholic clergy members accused of child sexual assault have been identified in 116 lawsuits filed in Alameda County under the California Child Victims Act, the law firm of Jeff Anderson & Associates revealed Tuesday.

The public data collected is believed to be a small percentage of what attorneys and advocates anticipate the final number of lawsuits filed to be.

Abuse survivors in bid to seize Catholic properties after church fails to pay court costs

Abuse survivors are attempting to seize Catholic church properties, including a Catholic order’s Sydney headquarters, to cover legal costs after their bills went unpaid, despite a court order.

Guardian Australia can reveal three survivors who settled with the Marist Brothers over historical child abuse claims have taken the drastic step of attempting to levy the Catholic order’s assets after a 28-day order to cover the legal costs lapsed without payment.

In one case, that of MM, the New South Wales supreme court has authorised the sheriff to levy a building on Coward Street, in the Sydney suburb of Mascot, which Marist uses as its headquarters. If Marist’s Sydney headquarters does not satisfy the debt, other properties owned by Marist can be similarly levied.

“Marist Brothers are spending a fortune of their followers’ money making life hard for victims of child abuse, of multiple, pandemic-level paedophilia going on in the Marist Brothers. Look up the number of Marist Brothers [in the royal commission],” he said.

Pope restores Jesuit excommunicated for violent assaults on women and gives him an honorary award. Pope is even keeping him as his advisor.

A prominent Jesuit priest has been continuing to practise his ministry despite the fact that it was restricted by the Vatican in January 2022 following allegations of sexual misconduct made against him.

According to reports on a number of Italian news sites, 68-year-old Father Marko Ivan Rupnik was in January 2022 ordered to stop practising his ministry following a series of complaints about his conduct going back to 1992.

However, despite the ban, Fr Rupnik received an honorary doctorate from the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná in Brazil on the 30th of November. He has also featured in a regular YouTube slot every Sunday commenting on the Sunday Gospel. The Diocese of Rome also posted a video of Rupnik speaking about Eucharistic adoration in February this year.

Fr Rupnik is a high profile figure in Rome and known as a friend and advisor to Pope Francis.

The first reports of “gruesome” psychological and sexual violence by Rupnik date back to 1992 when a solution was found in agreement with the bishop of Ljubljana to remove Rupnik from the Community.

The Vatican received a complaint against him in 2021 but declined to carry out a canonical process due to the statute of limitations (the complaint did not include minors), according to a statement released by the Jesuits on the 2 December.

However, following a further investigation by his religious order into allegations of abuse against religious sisters in Slovenia, Rupnik was in January 2022 banned from hearing confessions or conducting spiritual direction.

Rupnik had abused and violently assaulted consecrated women in the Loyola Community.

Pope John Paul II covered up abuse by priests decades before becoming the leader of the Catholic Church, according to new allegations published by the Dutch public broadcaster NOS.

The reported alleged that the pope ignored the sexual abuse of minors by some priests under his administration in Krakow, Poland, where he served as archbishop, and did not dismiss them.

The report is based on the investigation of Dutch journalist Ekke Overbeek, who conducted his research for three years in Poland, the homeland of the late pope.

Catholic collective narcissism linked to acceptance of myths about child sexual abuse

“Even though sexual relations between priests and minors have taken place inside the Catholic Church for centuries, the Catholic hierarchy was not always prone to fight against pedophilia in an official way,” said study author Marta Marchlewska, an associate professor and the head of the Political Cognition Lab at the Polish Academy of Sciences.

“In contrast, they put a lot of effort into keeping the existence of such activities hidden from public view to cover up the scandal and protect the positive image of their in-group. Some of the religious officials even suggested that the children are partly to blame for being sexually abused by priests. For example, Polish Archbishop Józef Michalik suggested that a pedophile act manifested itself ‘when a child is looking for love (…) it clings, it searches. It gets lost itself and then draws another person into this’ (Daily Mail Reporter, 2013, para. 9).”

The researchers surveyed a nationally representative sample of 1,300 Polish Catholics in which they were asked the extent to which they agreed with various pedophilia myths, such as “Usually, children who say they were sexually abused by a priest are not telling the truth” and “When children get sexually harassed by a priest, it is often because the way they said ‘no’ was unclear.” After six months, the participants were asked to complete the survey again. The final sample consisted of 719 Catholic participants aged between 18 and 91.

“We found that Catholic collective narcissism (i.e., a grandiose image of the in-group that is contingent upon external recognition of its worth) may be responsible for adopting pedophilia myths,” Marchlewska told PsyPost. “In other words, Catholics who identified with their religious in-group in a narcissistic way were more prone to adopt beliefs that justify sexual violence against children committed by in-group members (i.e., Catholic priests).”

“We found that the association between Catholic collective narcissism and pedophilia myth acceptance was reciprocal which suggests that not only narcissistic identity may boost pedophilia myths but also adopting pedophilia myths may boost collective narcissism. In line with this logic, messages priming denial of faults committed by in-group members may further lead to narcissistic identity which is not good either for outgroups or the mere ingroup.”

Dublin's Blackrock College: 300 men say Catholic priests sexually assaulted them at popular boys' high school

The latest chapter in Ireland’s seemingly perpetual crisis of child abuse in religious institutions is now being written. We have cycled through abuse in orphanages, industrial schools and Magdalene Laundries, only to now contend with abuse at literally the highest order of all.

The name Blackrock College reeks of privilege and upper-class mores. The South Dublin institution was as close to the equivalent of the playing fields of Eton as you could get. Among its alumni are Eamon de Valera, founder of the 26-county Irish state who ruled over Ireland for decades, and Archbishop John Charles McQuade, who almost single-handedly imposed his puritanical control over the Irish church for decades.

But when 300 sexual abuse charges have now been made against different Spiritan priests who taught in Blackrock it becomes impossible to just look away. The Irish Times reported this week, “More than 300 people have made abuse allegations against at least 78 Spiritan priests, a spokesman for the religious congregation has said. He also said the latter figure may increase slightly when all recent contacts have been fully processed.”

Do not believe for a moment that Blackrock is the only highbrow education institution to have had abusive priests in Ireland. Now that the scandal has moved from downstairs to upstairs, there will be many other orders coming under scrutiny.
