Has atheism made you different?
#81
RE: Has atheism made you different?
My agenda is only to say that just as atheism can be a great thing in people's lives people can also do bad things due to their value of it.

This assertion that I have seen that no-one has done wrong because they wished others to accept atheism is dangerous but like Christian who likes to say "if they really believed they wouldn't have done a thing wrong"

I say that atheism is open to abuse and that had Stalin not valued having his population proselytised towards it.

In not saying atheists are bad or likely to be like Stalin. I'm just saying that to take this holier than thou attitude that where there a atheism there is no harm or danger - it can breed no ill or wrong - is just dishonest and not facing up to our complex world.

I admire Rhythm for consistency in beliefs when he says also religion does not affect people (if this is what was said a while ago)and I agree as I don't believe in some entity that is religion really exists - there is just people and the world. In this way I agree - atheism is not a thing you touch or smell but a concept and as such people do react to it.

The thing is Stalin reacted badly to atheism in his attempt to spread it accross his country first by propaganda and then by murder.

Blaming Stalin's conquest on religion and stating atheism had nothing to do with it is exactly the same as blaming the holocaust in people being Jewish and stating it ahead nothing to do with nationalism.

I don't expect all people here stick to this rational but I see this quite dangerous rational (that holds that valuing atheism has never and could never lead to bad things) is played out on this forum again and again and again...

If religion can cause wars then admit that atheism can too - don't be scared of the truth. And don't think that I mean that atheism is a bad thing- that is NOT what I am saying.

Why don't you continue to fail at making that case in the thread where you are already failing to make that case, rather than dirtying up another? Is it your habit to leave corpses in the open for the ravens? I prefer to bury my dead.

-People- cause wars. Religion provides convenient excuses. "God told me he wants them dead" is entirely more persuasive than "no god told me he wants them dead". If you're having trouble understanding this - I doubt that I can help you on that count.

Someone is an atheist - they start a forum on atheism on the Internet.

Atheism never had an effect on any of them - ever...

Just for my own amusement let me see you lie your way out of this one.

There is no record of any teapot ever having been launched into space. A teapot is a specific creation having to do with brewing tea, a plant native to this earth. The idea that a teapot, an object specific to a human creation on Earth, would spontaneously appear in space is not credible. Therefore your original assertion is incredible.

If you try to suggest it was created by some god then you are assuming there is a god which is assuming the conclusion which is a logical fallacy.

That is another lie. Atheism is a fact not a value. Atheism disappears when believers produce physical evidence of their god instead of stupid argumentation and flying teapots.

The only good thing about believers is they do not mind being called liars when they are lying. One presumes believers such as yourself are proud of being liars.

The first Muslims all did wrong by spreading war across the entire middle east and north Africa and central Asia and the Indian subcontinent and so many islands in the Pacific.

That is one way to avoid Godwin's Rule. He did kill more than the Nazis but it is highly unlikely he killed more that Muslims in the promotion of their religion.

But Muslims are.

Te Salude!

I just point out Stalin murdered more than Hitler to show the issue is moot -- and silent too!

I'm glad you finally accept people can be motivated by their lack of belief in God (for example they may wish to prove of disprove the claim).

All Muslims NonyMouse?

I'll make the point in the Stalin thread too if you like R.

Just wanted to see if people would agree with me that people can react to atheism.

Seems they do agree...

Khrushchev's Corollary?
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

I think Richard Dawkins reacted to atheism when he wrote the God Delusion...

I don't think had he been atheist all his life he would be incapable of doing this...

Do you believe in God? No? Bang your dead!

Do you believe in God Yes, is it my God? No Bang your dead!

No, he reacted to theism.

Had theism not existed, the book would be irrelevant.
