I know alot of people who became atheists after reading religious books, most of them from the protestant north.
But growing up in a catholic erea most people I know here became atheist due to the revolting behavior of the catholic church in Europe.

I'd like to attend a Catholic Mass. I've never been to one. If I have to go to another protestant service though I'm bringing a cyanide pill just in case I need a quick escape.
Everything I needed to know about life I learned on Dagobah.

While you do not have to read anything to reject a religion. It helps with your crediblity when arguing their doctrine to know and understand it. To many times atheists make fools of themselves because they fail to recognize linguistic, archeological, and cultural influences that can affect meanings, verbiage and over all context. Regardless of what “pro-atheist” pseudo studies they make. Those particular sectors of their religion must respected in regards to basic understanding. Just like people like Ray Comfort who do not understand science. You look just as foolish if you do not understand ancient doctrines. I mean this in all good advice, I am used archeology and their own contextual meanings to show biblical errors on their part.
I would be a televangelist....but I have too much of a soul.

Why does that remind me of that scene in the Life of Brian where all the people desperate to follow a religion were chasing Brian and arguing over his "sign?"
"We must gather shoes!"
"Follow the gourd!"

You're not missing much. When you hear all the people respond in unison to something the priest says and recite prayers, just think of the sheep in Orwell's
Animal Farm.
Christian apologetics is the art of rolling a dog turd in sugar and selling it as a donut.

The catholic mass is a despicable show.
