So either translation works here, that's why it's been translated both ways. Other verses using this are Gen. 24:43; Exodus 2:8; Psalm 68:25; Proverbs 30:19; Song of Songs 1:3, 6:8;.
Immanuel could not have been the name of Isaiah's new born son, his wife already had a child, thus she is not a virgin and Isaiah never had a son named Immanuel.

This Rabbi says no...either translation doesn't work, not when there is a specific word for 'virgin', which Izzy doesn't use for this instance-

You get the same problem in the NT in Greek - the word for virgin is not used (Parthena) - the word for young woman is.

To be honest, 'Virgin Mary' makes for better iconography compared to any images that would involve 'Cum Dumpster Mary'.

If they wanted him to come back, they should have had him nailed to a freaking boomerang.
When you consider the fact that Castlevania is a historical reference just as much as is the Bible, you can argue that they did indeed nail him to a boomerang.

I cringe anytime someone starts in with what was meant by the "original" language a text of the Bible was written in and whether the word used had one meaning or two. The most important book in all of human existence, the book that guides you in god's ways and helps you to understand his mind, and he couldn't even bother to make it clear enough which words he used? "Here you go, humanity-- the book that will either save you for all eternity or doom you to eternal torment. Oh, and I lost the decoder ring, so you're on your own." *maniacal laughter*
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

You get the same problem in the NT in Greek - the word for virgin is not used (Parthena) - the word for young woman is.
The word means young unmarried woman that is able to bear children, if she was not a virgin then the word harlot would be used, of coarse sensible thinking doesn't agree with those who try and disprove scriptures, just trying to win is more important than the truth. How much more dishonest can people get. So I say again the word virgin or young woman are acceptable. You got proof she was not a virgin, then bring it, don't sit around acting like your claim is true without proof.

God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

You got proof that she even existed, then bring it, don't sit around acting like your claim is true without proof.
A Christian demanding proof is like a cop who drives his squad car around 20 MPH over the speed limit while handing out tickets for those who do five over.

That's really funny you say that. On Wednesday, my local news did a story on that and followed them around clocking their speed and confronting them on camera. One sheriff went 25 over the limit cause he was late for work. What did he do for a living you ask? He was a police driving instructor. That's what a lot of Christians look like in my eyes

"Scriptures" disprove themselves, moron. We merely point out the fallacies to lunatics like you.

This is what I call the "lost in translation" defense of the bible. It always boils down to "The word _______ in that passage had two meanings when it was translated, X and Y. While it looks like it means X, it really means Y."
It's just a weasel tactic to get out of admitting that certain passages in the bible are just plain wrong, embarrassing, or horrific.

A while back the local newspaper borrowed a radar gun and sat down near a school zone and clocked the speeds of different vehicles going over the 20 MPH school speed limit, then posted them online on their website. One of the pictures was one of the officers I worked with, in their cruiser.

You didn't read the link, or like Min said: you think yourself a better jew. Like Ryan says though...there's fuck all for proof the bitch is real, so really, it's moot. Just another instance of Christians rewriting Judaism to suit their agenda. Too bad the source books suck ass already.
