I am sir, I am Smile Hailing from the beautiful West Midlands (well, born in London).

The last bit absolves you of any West midland based sin. ;-)

Just for the record, the dad's a crackpot, but it's still his Dad. However misguided a man may be, he will always want what he thinks is best for his son. Why the mass surprise and revulsion I am not sure.

I always find insulting someone's beliefs and resorting to name calling only serves to strengthen their beliefs...believe me, I know.

Edit to add: How many times can a man use the word 'beliefs' in one sentence? Apologies for my bad England.

@OP: You come off as an asshole, and your Dad comes off as reasonable.

Sounds a lot like fucking 'god,' doesn't it?

@OP: You could have avoided it simply by using the group function (or circles or whatever they call it) in FB.

This notion that respect for a belief must be granted, is all the bullshit the theists here sprout. No. To the OP, where has his dad respected his disbelief? Only people that belief an X have granted some auto respect for some reason? Granted, he can always try to be the most reasonable and find another angle to approach his dad, perhaps, rub some sense into him.

The OP's dad should be worried more how he lost the chance to earn more of his child's respect, instead of cowarding inside some sense of self righteousness gave by indoctrination. One can say that religion doesn't do harm per se, but stops people from thinking and that isn't doing any good for anyone.

It's actually OP who's requesting respect for his beliefs, or lack thereof:
Quote:do me a huge favor and respect my lack of belief.
He then says he doesn't want to get into religion with his father, but just wants him to be a Dad:
Quote:I dont need an atonement, salvation, or superstitions. drop the stereotypical religious stuff. just be a dad. thats how I like you best.
So the father obliges by not talking about religion:
Quote:And the job searching?
And the douchebag son bitches that the father did as he requested:
Quote:I just wrote you a long message, all of which you ignored. check yourself.

"He can say dad, I am sorry I got mad and insulted you, and I'd like to have a relationship with you , outside of your religion if you can manage that." The OP is a grown man. He has a wife now and this relationship is far more important to him at the moment. What does she think? Is she atheist too? It sounds like they were forced into marriage. Can they make it work, do they love each other? This is the important thing the OP has to concentrate on.

Absolutely. We both love each other. The things that we have discussed is that if we weren't religious before we would have waited a bit longer to get married. But she really is the woman of my dreams and I'm incredibly lucky to have her by my side.

I'd love to argue with you, but I honestly don't care to.

Like any Christian, you have assumed the answers before you have asked the appropriate questions. How does it feel to draw conclusions without pulling in all the variables of the last 3 years? Dare to have a conversation?

I'm moving on.

Gosh, normally I try reply to every respond on my threads but this one completely blew up.

I would just like to thank every one for the love and support. It's really given me a boost in the past 48 hours.

I just gotta say, if I knew all of you in real life, I would totally invite you to my bond fires. The support and advice given to me on this forum in the last couple months have been priceless.

I don't know what I would do without you guys. Love Love Love Love

That's like... reverse relativity. You're moving forwards, so from his point of view it looks like you're staying in one place as he moves in what he perceives to be forwards (and is backwards)
