Why dead? That implies something used to be alive. I see non-life and the process of complexification leading to life. The line between non-life and life gets a little fuzzy, but I would say the different methods for maintaining a stable existence sets the two apart. But "dead" is definitely on the same side of the line as life.

I already did the "theist thing" where you make your beliefs and understanding fit a preconceived notion. It no longer works to make me believe in things that aren't there.
