I wouldn't ban religion - the governance needs to be secular.

However, not only would church property be taxed, religions/churches would not get an automatic "charitable organization" status.  
They would have to justify it by actually being charities, just like any other charitable organization.

I think the idea of properly implemented church/state separation is best. Let people believe what they want, but religious views shouldn't factor into politics. You don't pass laws because some book says this thing is good, and this thing is bad. The groups most likely wanting to ban religions other than their own, are ironically religious people. Most atheists wouldn't want to just turn the tables on people. We're not going to put christians in concentration camps, or whatever they think would happen if this country was treated like the secular country it's supposed to be.

A lot of interesting, well thought out responses. As far as the question: How would I ban religion? I would say, I know you couldnt't fully ban religion, but it was an exercise to get people to think and discuss ideas. I could have worded the question better. Perhaps something like, "What measures would you take to improve the religious situation in a country in, lets say, the U.S.?"

I would like to see churches allowed, especially for tax revenue, but I agree with those of you that said you wouldn't allow churches. I would say that we are an openly secular nation, if you don't like that, please don't come to this country. Religious people are welcome, but it is strictly to be kept in the home. We don't need god or religion in our government, schools, or on any other public property. You can put your baby jesus all over your house and yard and make an ass of yourself, but if you need it to be in a public park or in front of a court house, you can get the fuck out! There's plenty of other places you can do that in.

It would have to be some type of socialist government, where government owned the land. It legally owned restaurants, schools, etc., but made people's homes private property. It may sound like a lot of control, but if the government wasn't the iron fist type, who knows, people might be able to make it work.

I don't see the difference between someone buying a home and using it as a church and someone just building a church. Trying to ban what people do in private is ineffective.

I understand if that would not be enough freedom for people, we're just talking in theory here. It's fun to fantasize a country without religion.
