Imagine knowing that a child is being molested and not doing anything to stop it. Or if your religion requires you to be passive about child abuse, then your religion isn't worth following.
Quote:The lead bishop for safeguarding in England and Wales, Paul Mason, has said that mandatory reporting of disclosures of child abuse cannot break the seal of the confessional, because it would turn the priest “from a minister of God to an agent of the state”.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Somebody ought to bone that bishop up the ass and ask him not to report it. Let's see how he feels about that.

Or, someone should go to the confession booth and say "Father, I've been stealing money from the church," and you would see the priest jumping and punching him "You son of a bitch! How could you! Shame on you! Give it back!"

Landmark Settlement with Catholic Diocese of Buffalo for Mishandling Child Sexual Abuse Cases
New York Attorney General Letitia James today announced a landmark settlement with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo (Buffalo Diocese, the Diocese), resolving a lawsuit filed in November 2020 that alleged the Buffalo Diocese persistently failed to address the child sexual abuse crisis and systematically evaded the very reforms it publicly adopted nearly 20 years ago for investigating, reviewing, and responding to abuse complaints. Instead, the Buffalo Diocese protected accused priests from facing the potential consequences of abuse accusations by quietly removing them from ministry.
“For far too long, the Buffalo Diocese and its leaders failed their most basic duty to guide and protect our children,” said Attorney General James. “In choosing to defend the perpetrators of sexual abuse instead of defending the most vulnerable, the Buffalo Diocese and its leaders breached parishioners’ trust and caused many a crisis of faith. As a result of this action, the Buffalo Diocese will now begin a much-needed era of independent oversight and accountability, and my office will continue to do everything in its power to restore trust and transparency for the future. No individual or entity is above the law, and those who violate it in New York state will always be held accountable.”
In November 2020, following a two-year investigation, Attorney General James filed a lawsuit against the Buffalo Diocese, Bishop Emeritus Malone, and former Auxiliary Bishop Grosz for mishandling child sexual abuse claims and failing to uphold their responsibilities to victims of abuse, parishioners, and the public. In the complaint, OAG alleged that the defendants violated their legal and fiduciary obligations by failing to conduct proper investigations into child sexual abuse accusations and not monitoring numerous credibly accused priests.

1. Say fifty Hail Marys
2. Pack your bags, you're going to fresh pastu-- I mean, another dioscese.

Italy: Priest caught spying on women volleyball players in the locker room
The priest climbed onto a ramshackle chair and leaned over to reach the window. A passer-by saw him like this: in precarious balance as he looked into the locker room of the Pian del Lago sports hall, on the outskirts of Caltanissetta, where the athletes of the Albaverde volleyball club were changing after training. "What is he doing?", the boyfriend of one of the players who had gone to get his girlfriend yelled at him.
When the police arrived, the agents immediately recognized the voyeur. Spying from the window was a 46-year-old priest known in the city. "It was a moment of weakness", the distraught parish priest stammered before being identified. No measures have been taken against him: the priest, who has never been denounced for similar behavior, hasn’t taken pictures, made videos, or committed obscene acts. This ended with a report to the Prosecutor’s Office that, in the absence of a crime, will have no consequences, and with a slap on the wrist. The priest was really upset. So much so that after a few hours he would go to his bishop to tell the story and confess.

Victims call Italy Church's abuse report 'shamefully' limited
Italy's Catholic Church on Thursday released its first report on alleged sexual abuse of minors and vulnerable individuals but victims' advocates said the number of cases was likely much higher and denounced its limited scope as shameful.
The 41-page report, the first of two, covers only 2020-21. A second, promised report will cover abuse going back to 2000, although it is not clear when that will be released.
The report on 2020-21, which covers cases reported during those years but not necessarily taking place in that time, was done by a Catholic university in northern Italy. It said 89 people presumably had been abused by 68 alleged abusers, including priests as well as lay people such as church workers and religion teachers.
"It was already shameful that the (second study) would cover only cases from 2000 onwards," he told Reuters from his home in northern Italy.
Still, Zanardi said the report's numbers were significantly higher than he expected.
"If these numbers are correct, they are already high, but the real numbers are higher," he said. Extrapolating on statistics in the report, the number of victims in the last 22 years would be at least 2,000, he said.

A Catholic priest told a church official he was attracted to teens. They told him not to 'worry about it'
BALTIMORE — In the 1980s, Father Brian Cox told an official with the Catholic church he had a problem — he was attracted to teenage boys.
The official, according to court papers, brushed him off, telling the Westminster priest not to “worry about it.” Cox, in a taped conversation with one of his victims, said a bishop once told him he was a priest, and priests don’t need help.
It later would be revealed, through court records and newspaper reporting, that Cox had molested children at St. John Catholic School — an extension of the St. John Westminster parish where Cox was a pastor — from 1978 to 1989. He stayed on as an assistant at St. John, but his post formally ended in 1995 when an unnamed “third party” came forward to church officials and accused Cox of sexual abuse.
Cox is one of more than 150 Catholic clergy assigned to the Archdiocese of Baltimore who sexually abused children over the decades, according to a report prepared by Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh’s office.

Maryland Finds That for Hundreds of Clergy Abuse Victims, ‘No Parish Was Safe’
The attorney general of Maryland has identified more than 600 young victims of clergy sexual abuse over the course of 80 years in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, according to a court document filed Thursday.
The filing, which broadly outlines the attorney general’s findings, requests that a judge allow the release of the full report: a 456-page document detailing decades of clergy sex abuse in Maryland.
The new report marks a symbolic milestone in the long-running international abuse scandal that has shaken faith in the Catholic Church and led to some reforms and billions of dollars in settlements.

Superior Diocese releases names of clergy with credible claims of child sex abuse
The Catholic Diocese of Superior has released names of almost two dozen clergy that it says have had credible claims of sexually abusing minors made against them, including one placed on leave from the ministry as recently as September.
Nate’s Mission, an advocacy group seeking to end clergy abuse, questioned the legitimacy of the list released by the Superior Diocese. Peter Isley, the nonprofit’s program director, said such a list is only as truthful as the people compiling it. He criticized the timing of the list’s release after 5 p.m. on a Tuesday before a holiday weekend.
Last year, Kaul launched a statewide independent review of reported abuse by clergy and leaders of faith organizations. In April of this year, Kaul said officials had received 204 reports that led to criminal charges in one case. The list of names from the Catholic Diocese of Superior brings the total number of individuals accused statewide to nearly 180. The Wisconsin Department of Justice didn’t return a request for comment.
Last year, Kaul said not all of the state’s five Catholic dioceses were cooperating with the statewide inquiry.
Nate’s Mission claims that dioceses are still withholding names of alleged abusers, including 69 names in addition to 48 that have already been published by the Diocese of Green Bay. The group turned over whistleblower documents to the Wisconsin Department of Justice this year that Isely alleges demonstrate a systematic cover-up of abuse at each of the state’s five dioceses.
