They make exceptions here and there, but apparently, there is an unspoken rule.

I could say something so hideously inappropriate here, but the main point is that the Catholic church must be dismantled. Take the wealth assembled in the Vatican, let real museums bid on the pieces, and distribute the proceeds amongst charities that need it. Hell, take all that wealth and throw it at solving AIDS: Bet the disease could be beaten with that kind of cash.

As early as about 1980, when I was briefly involved with the Catholic Church, some liberal priests were allowing girls/women to serve at mass. It was grounds for excommunication to do that - both for the priest who allowed or requested it and for the girl or woman doing the serving.
Technically, an "alter boy", or "acolyte" in the Roman Catholic Church has the lowest-form of Holy Orders - a sacrament that includes deacons and priests. And, we know how wrong it would be to have women priests!
I had this explained to me very vocally by a "conservative Catholic" after such a "liberal priest" called on me once to serve at Mass. The conservative was right - and she did have plenty of references with "imprinteur"s to back up her assertion that it was "wrong" and that it warranted excommunication. Just one of many things that led me to giving up Catholicism for Lent of 1983.

This seems a little goofy that a priest has merely "sinned", and just can go to confession and can be forgiven for raping altar boys. A priest though who allows a woman to serve at mass would be excommunicated if it came to the attention of the wrong people in the church hierarchy.
At the very least, I know this priest was not molesting "his" alter boys. The regular one was a guy who was about 50. A secondary one was a college student who was about 20. I was a college student of about 19 at the time. He could not have sexually molested any of us, nor would it have been pedophilia since we were all adults.

That may be why Catholic girls are hot and Protestant girls, not so much.
