Isn't ObamaCare optional?

I see a ton of conservatives touting it as unaffordable for everyone on it. Why wouldn't those people whose rates are going up by a billion percent simply get insurance direct from the insurance company?

As far as I know, it's not a law that you have to get insurance through the exchanges.
