Traveling at the speed of light is impossible. So, if the aliens were to go on a trek across the galaxy, it would take thousands of years. They would lose touch with everything including there purpose. If something broke, there is no 'Deep Space Nine" port of call to stop over at for repairs.

I think alien/extraterrestrials are highly unlikely if not impossible. They certainly did not show up in those alleged tiny orbiters. Where is the mother-ship? It has to be big enough to be seen as it must be a generation ship. Borg size.
