A godparent is often very much expected to be involved in the religious upbringing of a godchild. Not always, but it depends on the denomination I suppose.
My kids don't have godparents, but my best friend and her wife would take our kids in should something happen to me and my husband. I picked her mainly because she and her wife only have two kids, and they would have an easier time than any of my siblings (who have more kids of their own). When my eldest three turn 18, then they'll have that position.

The whole tone of Church teaching in regard to woman is, to the last degree, contemptuous and degrading. - Elizabeth Cady Stanton
