You can easily attend and show your care and respect for people without actually participating. If they care enough to want you to attend you don't need to be an asshole about it.
I've attended plenty of Catholic weddings and funerals and even a Lutheran funeral...because it's the decent thing to do.

He's allowed to make the choices he wants, and I so happen to agree with how he wants to lead his life.
I summarily removed myself from my family so that I would not have to attend any of their nonsense social gatherings.
You want to be a participating family member in your own family, you do you. But don't shame someone else for not doing what you're doing.
I suppose I would have made a real important statement about something had I refused to attend my grandparents' funerals. That statement would have been that I was an uncaring asshole.
