That's because he followed Jesus and the "real" Jews then labeled him as fringe as they probably labeled the other Jewish NT writers. Jesus was himself Jewish as it gets.
There's a very good reason why the religious establishment would label an upstart cult as 'fringe'. I'll leave you to guess what it might be.
